Activella Description

Activella is an oral medication drug consisting primarily of estradiol and norethindrone acetate. The usual concentration of estradiol and norethindrone acetate in the tablet is about 1.0 mg/0.5 mg or vice versa. The tablet also contains lactose monohydrate, corn starch, copovidone, magnesium stearate, talc, triacetin and hypromellose. It is available in different dosages. Estradiol is an off-white or white crystalline powder, norethindrone acetate (NETA) is a crystalline powder that is white or yellowish white in colour. The tablet is usually round in shape and white-yellowish in colour.

Conditions Treated by Activella

Activella is normally prescribed to women after menopause. It is only administered to women who have not undergone a hysterectomy. The medicine is administered to reduce the occurrence or frequency of hot flashes. Since women are also prone to osteoporosis post menopause, the medicine is often prescribed to women to stop or delay symptoms. In certain cases, Activella may be used to treat women who have not undergone a hysterectomy if they suffer from severe vulvar or vaginal atrophy due to menopause.

Activella Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

The drug is administered to post menopausal women only. Under normal circumstances, 1.0 mg / 0.5 mg is prescribed once daily. Estrogen medication is normally prescribed with a progestin to avoid further complications. Depending on a patient’s case history and present medical condition, doctors may change dose requirements. However, Activella is normally not administered more than once a day. Lower doses may be prescribed to women who are being treated for prevention of osteoporosis. For treatment of other menopause related problems or vulvar doctors may choose to prescribe topical vaginal products. However, in certain cases, lower doses of Activella may also be considered. Doctors normally begin the medication on lower dosages and increase the dosage when and if required.

b.) Missing a dose

The medication is usually prescribed once a day. If you miss your daily dose you may experience minor problems like weakness or fatigue. Depending on the seriousness of your medical condition, your doctors will advice you accordingly.

c. Overdosing

When women overdose on Activella it may result in severe health complications like extreme vaginal bleeding, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, pain in the abdomen etc. If you have consumed more than the prescribed quantity of the medication, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. In certain cases, hospitalization may be required. An overdose in children may prove to be fatal. The tablets should therefore be kept hidden from them.

Activella Warnings

Activella should not be administered to patients who have undergone a hysterectomy. It is best to avoid Activella if you suffer from extreme vaginal bleeding, any type of cancer, blood clots, liver disease, any other organ disease etc. Use of estrogen heavy drugs may lead to cancer in the lining of the uterus. Activella is high in estrogen and should therefore be used carefully under strict supervision. The medicine should be used for limited periods of time. Prolonged regular use may lead to other complications. It is safer to administer the dose for short periods of time with regular intervals in between. Estrogen medication increases the risk of stroke or heart problems in patients. Should minor symptoms arise, it is advisable to discontinue the medication immediately. Doctors may need to change the medication in cases where patients show severe side effects. Women with a history of heart related problems should be administered lower doses of estrogen under regular observation. If patients are on heart medication, it is safer to avoid administering estrogen heavy medication at the same time. If a patient is about to undergo any surgery, Activella medication should be discontinued 5-6 weeks prior to the surgery. Overuse of Activella may lead to other health complications like breast lumps, cancer, changes in hormone etc. It is safer to undergo other health check-ups while on Activella medication. Women should especially undergo annual breast examinations while on estrogen or hormone medication. Prolonged use of Activella may also result in severe Dementia, Gallbladder disease, Hypercalcemia, Problems in the eye etc. Overuse may also result in glucose intolerance.

Activella Side Effects

During medication, it is common to suffer from side effects. However, if certain side effects last for more than a few days, it is safer to seek medical attention. Minor side effects may last a few hours, but as long as they disappear it should not be considered serious. Some common side effects include back pain, pain in the arms, pain or swelling in the legs, headaches, nausea, weakness, diarrhoea, respiratory problems, thickening of the uterus, gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, weight loss or gain, pain in the breasts, cysts, fibroids, fungal infections, skin infections, viral problems etc. Patients may suffer from allergic reactions due to the inactive ingredients in Activella. It is safer to get an allergic test done before beginning medication. Difficulty in breathing, facial swelling like swelling of the lips, tongue, nose etc, pain in the chest, abnormal bleeding, tenderness in the abdomen etc are all common side effects of Activella too. Some of the side effects could actually be symptoms of menopause and not because of the medication. It is always safer to check with your doctor when you face any discomfort. Less serious side effects include tenderness in the breasts, weakness and fatigue, darkening of the skin in certain areas, problems in the eyes or difficulty in focusing, difficulty in wearing contact lenses, physical discomfort, changes in menstruation or extreme pain during a cycle. Some patients may suffer from unique side effects not listed above. When on medication, if you experience side effects that last for more than a day, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Furthermore, if you suffer from any problem other than those listed above, medical care is important.

Activella interacts with beta-thromboglobulin, increased thyroid binding globulin leading to increased thyroid hormones. The drug also interacts with corticosteroid binding globulin.
