Alphagan P Drug Description

Alphagan P is a medicinal drug, which contains brimonidine. Brimonidine is an alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonist drugs that finds use in the treatment of ocular hypertension or open angle glaucoma. Brimonidine does its work by decreasing the synthesis process of aqueous humor present in the eye and at the same time increasing the amount of aqueous humor that is drained from the eye through the process of uveoscleral outflow.

Alphagan P, which contains brimonidine, is thus used to reduce the quantity of fluid present in the eye and thereby decrease the pressure that exists within the eye.

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

It is extremely important that you take Alphagan P exactly as your doctor prescribes. Be very careful not to take bigger or smaller amounts or administer the drug for a longer time than recommended and follow the directions given on the prescription label.

Take care in washing your hands thoroughly prior to using the eye drops. Ensure that you are not wearing any contact lenses while you are administering Alphagan P as the medication might contain a certain preservative that is absorbed by contact lenses. In order to apply the eye drops:

Tilt your head back and create a tiny pocket by pulling down your lower eyelid. While in this position, hold the dropper just above the eye with the tip downward. Squeeze out a drop from the dropper while looking away from the dropper in an upward direction and shut your eye as soon as the drop falls. Press your finger on the inside corner of your eye in a gentle manner for about a minute so as to prevent any of the fluid from draining into the tear duct. If you happen to be using any other form of eye medication, let at least five minutes pass after you have used Alphagan P eye drops before you use the other medication. Take great care that the dropper does not touch any other surface, including your hands and eyes. If the dropper somehow becomes contaminated it might end up causing an infection in the eye which could have severe consequences such as loss of vision or severe eye damage.

Additionally, do not use Alphagan P if you see that the color of the liquid has changed or if particles have developed inside. Fill out a new prescription through your doctor if this happens.

b.) Missing a Dose

If you end up missing a dose, take the missed dose the moment you remember to do so. If however you remember when it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not however take any extra medication to make up for this missed dose.

c.) Overdosing
