Atelvia DR
Atelvia DR Drug Description
Atelvia DR is the brand name for the generic drug Risedronate sodium used for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. It is a bisphosphonate compound available in a delayed release formulation and is intended for continued therapeutic use, punctuated with periodic re-evaluations.
Conditions Treated by Atelvia DR
Atelvia delayed release tablets or Risedronate retard bone loss and increase bone mass. This may help in the prevention of bone fractures. It also changes the bone formation cycle and bone breakdown cycle. This medicine is mainly prescribed for treating Paget’s disease of the bones and osteoporosis in both women and men. It is also used in the prevention of osteoporosis.
Atelvia DR Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Doctors generally ask their patients to consume Atelvia DR immediately after your morning breakfast along with a minimum of 4 oz. of plain water. You should not lie down for half an hour after consuming this medication. Patients are generally prescribed with one 35 mg delayed release tablet that has to be consumed once every week.
b.) Missing a Dose
For those who take one Atelvia each week or once per month or once every fortnight, missing a dose should not cause problems. Take the dose the next day or whenever you remember the first thing in the morning. After that you can return to your usual dosing schedule, but you should never consume two tablets together in 1 day. If you have to take it every day in the morning and you forget a dose, don’t take it in the middle of the day or whenever you remember. Skip the missed dose and consume the tablet next morning. Don’t take double doses ever.
c.) Overdosing
If you suspect an overdose, consume a full glass of milk and then contact your nearest ER or local poison control centre or your physician. Try to suppress the urge to vomit and sit upright. Do not lie down or throw up the milk. Symptoms of overdosing include unusual behaviour and thoughts, irritability, convulsions, seizures, tight muscles in the face, tingling, numbness, muscle cramps, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, heartburn and nausea.
Atelvia DR Warnings
Atelvia DR should not be used for treating paediatric patients or patients suffering from severe renal impairment where the creatinine clearance is less than 30 ml per minute. Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medication, are unable to sit or stand upright for half an hour (after taking this medicine), suffer from hypocalcaemia or oesophageal abnormalities such as achalasia or strictures that delay emptying of your oesophagus. Since the same active ingredient is found in both Actonel and Atelvia, you should not take both medicines together. Any one of this medication should be used at a time. Some patients have reported atypical femur fractures after taking Atelvia. Physicians should periodically re-evaluate patients suffering from groin pain or new thigh pain to rule out possibilities of femoral fractures. Continued use of Atelvia can result in severe muscle, joint or bone pain. If the pain turns severe or if you develop severe symptoms, you should contact your physician and discontinue the use of this drug. In rare cases, patients have reported osteonecrosis of the jaws after taking this drug. If you suffer from hypocalcaemia, rectify this medical condition before starting therapy with Atelvia as this medication can worsen your hypocalcaemia. Atelvia can sometimes cause excessive irritation of the upper GI mucosa. If you already suffer from active upper gastrointestinal diseases, this medication should be used with caution. Follow your dosing instructions carefully and discontinue the use of this drug if your symptoms worsen or if new symptoms appear. If you have taken Atelvia, give a gap of at least 30 minutes before consuming other medications such as antacids, calcium supplements or multivitamins. You need to wash down Atelvia with a full glass of plain water. Do not use mineral water instead. Do not eat anything for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication.
