Atripla Description
Atripla is a drug given to patients who have HIV. It is a combination of two different type of HIV medications. It contains two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors also referred to as NRTIs and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor also called as NNRTI. Atripla has 600 mg of Sustiva (efavirenz) and 300 mg of Viread (tenofovir) both of which are NRTIs, and it also contains 200 mg of Emtriva (emtricitabine) which is an NNRTI.

Atripla helps the body block HIV reverse transcriptase. This is a viral enzyme that is required for the HIV to multiply. By lowering the amount of HIV in the blood, Atripla helps increase the number of T cells (CD4 cells) thus enhancing the immune system of the body. a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
You must take Atripla exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You should never change the dose or stop taking the drug sudddenly or without checking with your doctor first. Atripla is generally prescribed to adult patients who are of 12 years of age or older who have a body weight of at least 40kgs or 88 lbs. Atripla is generally prescribed as one tablet in a day. b.) Missing a Dose

Atripla Warnings
Atripla is not to be taken by pregnant women as it can harm the unborn baby. You must also inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning on getting pregnant. Always use two forms of birth control including a barrier form such as a condom or diaphragm having spermicidal properties for at least 12 weeks after your treatment has been completed. It is not known whether Atripla or any of its components pass into breast milk and what effect they may have on a baby. You should take all your HIV medicines as prescribed by your doctor. You should also tell your doctor about all the other drugs you are taking and about any allergies you have. Your healthcare provider should know if you have a history of mental illness, liver disorders, kidney function problems, bone problems etc. Taking Atripla can interfere with activities that require concentration and mental alertness. Always keep the container tightly closed and make sure the medicine is kept away from children and pets. Ideally Atripla should be stored at twenty five degrees Celsius or seventy seven degrees Fahrenheit.
Atripla Side Effects
Side effects may occur in some patients after they start taking Atripla. Common side effects include:
- Allergic reactions such as hives, rashes, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty in breathing.
- Concentration problems
- Insomnia or sleep related problems
- Uneven heart rate
- Dizziness, drowsiness or reduced alertness
- Pain in the muscles
- Mild nausea, gas, diarrhea, vomiting sensations
- Temporary breast enlargement in male patients
- Redistribution of fat in areas such as the back, neck, breast, chest, and stomach area; or loss of fat from the face, legs and arms

- Less or no urination
- Skin discoloration
- Signs of liver damage
- Severe stomach or abdominal pain
- Convulsions or seizures
- Unusual thoughts or behavioral changes, hallucinations, anger, severe depression, thoughts of hurting yourself or other people
- Dark colored urine or stools
- Jaundice like symptoms such as yellow coloration of the eyes or skin
- Severe rashes on the body that do not go away

Atripla can react with other medicines that you are taking.
