Axert Description
Axert tablets are a form of oral medication that contain almotriptan malate. Almotriptan malate is a whitish, yellowish crystalline powder that is soluble in water. The oral tablet contains between 6 to 12 mg of almotriptan. Tablets are therefore sold either in small 6 mg sizes or 12 mg sizes. Other inactive ingredients like mannitol, povidone, sodium, iron oxide, cellulose, titanium dioxide and sodium fumarate are also present. The tablet is usually white-yellow in colour.
Conditions Treated by the Axert
Axert tablets are commonly prescribed to patients suffering from migraine headaches. It is used to treat both children (above the age of 12) and adults. Children and adolescents are usually prescribed smaller 6 mg doses. Typically, Axert is a headache medicine. People suffer from headaches due to various reasons. Lack of sleep, insufficient food or stress can lead to headaches. However, Axert is usually only prescribed when migraine has been identified to be the root cause of the problem. The medicine works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. This helps reduce other symptoms related to common headaches or migraines like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Axert can only be used to treat headaches after they begin. It is not used or prescribed to stop future headaches or reduce the number of migraine attacks in a patient.
Axert Dosage Information
a.) Typical dosage recommendations
Axert is used to treat people who suffer from migraine headaches. However, it is used to heal a headache only once it begins. Typically, patients should not take more than 2 tablets within 24 hours. If the headache doesn’t stop after taking one tablet, a patient can be administered another tablet after 2 hours, but never more than 2 tablets within 24 hours. This medicine is not known to stop the future occurrence of a headache and therefore cannot be used regularly.
b.) Missing a dose
Axert is not prescribed for regular use since it doesn’t help stop future headaches. When a patient suffers from a headache, Axert is administered to stop the headache. If the headache shows no sign of improvement within 2 hours then another tablet is administered. Since it is not normally used as a prescription pill, patients cannot miss a dose. However, if a patient has been advised to take a 2nd tablet and forgets to do so, it may result in severe physical weakness and increased pain. This may lead to severe problems. Under normal circumstances, if a patient’s symptoms do not show any sign of improvement then a higher dose may need to be administered or a new medicine may need to be used.
c.) Overdosing
It is not advisable to take more than 2 tablets on the same day. If your headache is very severe and you have more than 2 tablets within a 24 hour period, you may face other problems like blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing and confusion. If you have more than 2 tablets you must contact your doctor immediately. An overdose of Axert in patients suffering from heart problems may prove to be fatal. Furthermore, consuming more than 2 tablets within a 24 hour period can result in other health problems like fluctuations in blood pressure, difficulty in breathing, uncontrolled vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting and confusion. If a patient consumes more than 2 tablets within 24 hours, they may need to be pumped.
