Cozaar Warnings

Certain precautions have to be taken before cozaar can be prescribed. Hence it is important that you provide your doctor with some specific information. If you are a female patient then the first thing that you have to tell your doctor is if you are planning on becoming a mother, or if you are pregnant or a nursing mother. This is important as cozaar could cause birth defects including the death of the fetus. All patients should inform the doctor about his or her allergies to food or medicines especially to any ingredient of cozaar. Informing the doctor about your past medical history is very important, especially if you are prone to angioedema or swelling of the face, hands, eyes or tongue. Inform the doctor if you have a history of heart diseases too especially if you have suffered any heart attack. Your doctor should also be aware if you have problems of the blood vessels, kidney related problems or diabetes. Tell him if you have suffered any strokes recently. Inform him if you suffer from dehydration or have a low blood volume. Imbalance of electrolytes like high levels of potassium in your blood should also be made known to the doctor. Inform him about any surgeries, major or minor that you are scheduled to have in the near future or have undergone recently.

Cozzar Side Effects

Like with most drugs patients using cozaar have also reported side effects. The most common are diarrhea, nasal congestion, coughs, muscle cramps, dizziness and insomnia. Sometimes cozaar could increase the serum potassium level which could lead to serious heart problems. Reduction of kidney functions, chest pains, irregular heart rate, and pain or burning while urinating are some of the more serious side effects reported by a few patients. Rare instances of muscle breakdown in patients using cozaar are also known.

A very necessary precaution that you should observe if you are taking cozaar is that you should not consume alcohol as it could lower your blood pressure to dangerous levels and increase the risk of side effects.

Possible Cozaar Drug Interaction

Most importantly, before prescribing cozaar, your doctor should know about any medicines or supplements that you are using. If you are using diuretics then taking cozaar could drastically lower your blood pressure. Cozaar could also increase the risk of side effects if taken with Carbolith (lithium). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) or Advil (ibuprofen) are known to nullify the effects of cozaar. So a thorough list of whatever medicines you are using should be provided to your doctor.
