Detrol Drug Description
Detrol is the brand name of a generic drug Tolterodine tartrate which is prescribed for treating various symptoms of a hyperactive bladder. Patients who suffer from urinary incontinence or feel the urge to urinate frequently or have lost their bladder control can use Detrol to find relief. It belongs to a class of drugs known as muscarinic receptor antagonists and can be obtained only through a valid physician’s prescription. It is a type of antispasmodic that reduces bladder muscle spasms and consequently also decreases the patient’s urge to urinate which is created by bladder muscle spasm.
Detrol is mainly used for treating urinary bladder diseases and urinary incontinence. Tolterodine inhibits bladder contractions, detrusor over activity and therefore is effective against nocturnal incontinence, reduces the urge to evacuate frequently and can combat urinary frequency, commonly seen in older adults.
Detrol Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Typical dosage recommendations vary from patient to patient and it is your physician who should determine the right dose for you. For patients suffering from bladder problems, the dosage is around 2 mg of Detrol tablet twice a day in case of adults. However, your physician will adjust your dosage depending on your health needs. For children, the dosage and usage will be determined by the physician. For extended release capsules available for oral usage, the dosage is around 4 mg to be taken once each day. This dosage recommendation is for adults and may require adjustment. Dosage recommendations for kids will again be determined by the physician. Detrol can be taken without or with food, but it has to be consumed at around the same time every day. If you are using the extended release capsule, you should swallow it whole with plenty of water, without chewing, opening or crushing it.
b.) Missing a Dose
If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But if it is time already for your next dose, you should return to your original dosing schedule and throw out the missed dose. Please do not take double doses all at once to compensate for your missed dose.
c.) Overdosing
If you suspect an overdose, rush the patient to the nearest ER or contact your local poison control helpline or local emergency number.
