Femara (letrozole)

Femara Description

The enzyme aromatase activates androgens in our body to get converted into estrogens. These estrogens then bind to estrogen receptors which aid cells, especially cancer cells to divide rapidly. Femara is the trade name under which Letrozole an aromatase inhibitor is marketed. This drug reduces the production of estrogen and thereby deprives cancer cells of their food. Femara should be kept out of reach of children and pets and should be stored at 77°F protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Femara is available in tablets of 2.5mg.

Conditions Treated by Femara

Femara or more specifically Letrozole is used to treat hormonally responsive breast cancer, after surgery, in postmenstrual women. This drug has also been used for ovarian simulation and also to promote spermatogenesis in males. Some athletes who use steroids take Femara as its anti-estrogen property reduces water retention and prevents bloating. It is also known to prevent certain side effects of anabolic steroids.
