Imitrex Nasal Spray Drug Description

The Imitrex nasal spray is consists primarily of sumatriptan which is a subtype agonist. Sumatriptan is a white or off white coloured powder like substance. The powder is highly soluble in liquids and is saline. Each spray contains between 5 mg to 20 mg of sumatriptan along with other active ingredients. Each box when sold contains about 6 spray packs.

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

Most patients however get longer and quicker relief with a dose of 20 mg sprays. However, every patient reacts differently to the medication. Patients who do not suffer from severe attacks may find relief with smaller doses too.

b.) Missing a dose

Most doctors do not advise the regular use of the Imitrex nasal spray. The spray is usually used during or before a migraine attack. It is therefore not possible for patients to miss a dose, as the medicine is not prescribed for regular or preventive use. If you suffer from constant migraine attacks it is safer to keep the spray with you at all times for use during an attack.

c. Overdosing

The spray is usually administered during a severe migraine attack to provide relief. If the headache returns, patients are advised to use the spray again after 2 hours. However, an overdose can occur if patients spray over 40 mg a day. If the headache returns more than once during the same day it is better to contact your doctor than to use the spray again without consultation. An overdose may lead to breathlessness, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, palpitations etc. Patients may need to be hospitalised if the overdose symptoms are serious. In rare cases patients may suffer from cardiac problems due to an overdose.

The spray should only be used in cases of migraine attacks and not regular headaches. Patients who suffer from hypertension should avoid the Imitrex nasal spray. The drug may result in sudden and excessive elevation in blood pressure which may prove to be fatal to hypersensitive patients. Doctors and family members of patients who use Imitrex nasal spray should keep an eye out for cardiac problems in them. The Sumatriptan in the drug might result in vasospastic reactions other than coronary problems. If elder patients do not suffer from severe migraine attacks, it is advisable and safer to prescribe oral medication tablets in place of sprays. Sumatriptan may lead to partial blindness or bloody diarrhoea. If a patient is already suffering from other serious problems, like liver or kidney problems, immunity related problems then it is advisable to avoid use of the Imitrex nasal spray. Overuse or even regular use may lead to constant nasal inflammation and discolouration or even redness. This can eventually result in severe burning sensations or even discharge from the nose. The spray should only be used during an attack, however if a patient suffers from constant acute migraine attacks other forms of medication should be provided. Patients may also eventually suffer from chest discomfort, tightness of the jaw, change in ECG levels, sometimes angina. It is better to discontinue use if the other problems that arise out of use of the medication are several. If patients do not show positive signs of improvement after the first dose during an attack, another medicine should be administered for subsequent attacks. Other existing neurological conditions in the patient should be completely healed before use if the spray. If not, it will lead to other severe neurological problems at a later stage. Since the spray may cause change in metabolism, it should be sprayed with care in older patients.

While most medicines are only prescribed once considered completely safe, they may still lead to some side effects in users. This may not mean that the drug is unfit for use. It just means that the drug is either not suiting the body or that it is getting used to the body. Patients are known to suffer from the following common side effects like breathlessness, skin rashes, burning sensations, sinuses, facial swelling, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, unusual taste in the mouth, stomach pain or infection, throat discomfort etc. Some patients may react very seriously to the medicine. In some cases, patients have suffered cardiac events too. The spray should be used with extreme care and only on prescription. Serious events like fatalities due to cardiac arrests are rare but have occurred in the past. Other side effects sometimes observed in patients include abnormal menstrual cycle, inflamed bladders, urinary infections, change in skin colour and texture, sudden wrinkling of the skin, bronchitis, influenza, respiratory tract diseases, chest pain, tightness in the neck, pain in the face, jaws etc, sudden aggressiveness, convulsions, dystonia, facial paralysis, sensitivity to change in weather, fatigue, stinging or tingling of the body, hot sensations etc. While these are the common symptoms or widely observed ones, it doesn’t mean every patient will suffer from side effects listed here. Some patients suffer from rare side effects. It is always safer to report any sign of discomfort even if only minor to your doctor. In severe cases, doctors may ask patients to discontinue the medication or reduce the dose during a migraine attack.
