Inspra Drug Description

Inspra is the brand name of a group of medications that are known as aldosterone antagonists. It is indicated in the treatment of patients who have had a cardiac attack due to high blood pressure. It helps to prevent further worsening of the cardiac condition and thereby improves survival chances. High blood pressure or hypertension is a chronic disorder of the heart in which the pressure of blood flowing through the arteries is increased to abnormal levels. It is a life-threatening condition and is responsible for several fatal conditions like cardiac stroke, cardiac attack (myocardial infarction), cardiac failure, peripheral arterial diseases and aneurysms of the arteries (such as aortic aneurysm). Hypertension can also lead to renal impairments or failure. Even moderate hypertension can lead to a significant shortening of life expectancy. Inspra is available in two strengths of 25mg and 50mg. It contains eplerenone as the active ingredient. Inspra 25mg contains 25mg of eplerenone while Inspra 50mg contains 50mg of eplerenone. The tablets also contain lactose, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate etc and appropriate colouring agents as the inactive ingredients. Both 25mg and 50mg tablet is diamond shaped, biconvex, film-coated, yellow coloured and embossed with ‘Pfizer’ on one side and ‘NSR’ over ‘25’ or ‘50’ on the other side. Inspra is presented by Pfizer Canada Inc. Conditions Treated by the Drug Inspra is prescribed concomitantly with other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Eplerenone, the prime ingredient in Inspra, is an aldosterone antagonist. It works by blocking the hormone aldosterone and lowering the retention of sodium and water by your body. This lowers your blood pressure and prevents life-threatening cardiac and renal disorders. It is also prescribed to improve the chances of survival in people who show symptoms of further cardiac disorders like left ventricular systolic dysfunction after a cardiac attack (myocardial infarction) and congestive cardiac failure.

Inspra Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

Several factors affect the typical dosage of a medicine including age of the patient, past and present medical conditions, individual response and tolerance, other treatments going on simultaneously etc. In general, the typical starting dose of Inspra after myocardial infarction is one 25mg tablet to be taken once a day. Depending on your response and tolerance, the dose can be increased within a month to one 50mg tablet to be taken once a day. Your doctor will commence treatment with Inspra within a fortnight of your cardiac attack. In case of hypertension, initial dose of Inspra is 50mg to be taken once daily. Your physician will closely monitor your condition for one month and may increase your dosage to 50mg twice a day for better response. The maximum dose of Inspra should not exceed 100mg per day. Inspra is to be orally administered and can be taken before or after your meals.

b.) Missing a dose

In case you have missed taking a particular dose of Inspra, take it whenever you remember. However, do not take two doses at a time in order to compensate for a missed dose. Skip the missed dose and carry on with your normal dosage schedule instead.

c.) Overdosing

Overdosing Inspra can result in several symptoms like dizziness, feeling like losing consciousness, slow heart beat, weak pulse rate, weakness in muscles etc. You may also suffer from severe side effects such as allergic reactions (rashes, itching, swelling in mouth/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty in breathing etc), pain in the chest, unusual vaginal bleeding, sore or enlarged breasts (if you are male), palpitation, persistent diarrhoea, vomiting or swelling in the feet or ankles. Contact your physician immediately if you have accidentally overdosed and are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

Inspra Warnings

Since Inspra is prescribed for life-threatening conditions, it is important for you to know everything about this medication, including risks, benefits, precautions, and implications etc., before commencing treatment. Your physician too should know all details about your past and present medical condition, other medications you are taking presently or any other information that may help him/her to decide the safety and efficacy of Inspra for you. Inform your physician if you are allergic to eplerenone (the prime ingredient in Inspra) or to any of the inactive ingredients present in the medication. He/she should also know if you are suffering from acute renal impairment as Inspra will then be contraindicated for you. Never take potassium supplement or salt substitute without medical consultation. Always inform your doctor or dentist about your treatment with Inspra before having a surgery. Do not drive or perform any task that requires alertness immediately after taking Inspra as the medicine is likely to make you feel dizzy. Avoid taking alcohol. Inspra may make you feel tired and weak. While this is normal, consult your physician in case you feel exceedingly listless and exhausted. Your doctor will need to monitor your condition frequently while you are undergoing treatment with Inspra. Never miss appointments or lab tests. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing before starting your treatment with Inspra. The medicine should also be used with caution in geriatric patients and paediatric patients below four years of age. Do not chew, break or crush Inspra but swallow the tablet whole with water. Always store Inspra in a cool and dark place where children or pets cannot access it. Never share your medication with another person even if the symptoms are similar.
