K-Dur (Potassium Chloride SA)

K-Dur Description

K-Dur is the brand name of a mineral supplement used for treating or preventing low blood levels of potassium. Sufficient blood levels of potassium are necessary for your kidneys, muscles, heart, nerves and cells to work properly. Sometimes, eating a well balanced diet is more than sufficient for healthy levels of potassium in the blood. However, certain diuretics or water pills, vomiting, severe diarrhea and other medical conditions or a poor diet can make your body lose large quantities of potassium at a rapid rate. Dietary intake of potassium cannot replace this lost mineral.

Conditions Treated by K-Dur

Oral K-Dur is prescribed for treating or preventing low levels of potassium in the blood. It helps to maintain electrophysiological balance, isotonicity and acid base balance throughout the body tissues. It is also necessary for carbohydrate metabolism, normal renal function and for nerve impulse transmission. It is crucial for contraction of smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscles.

K-Dur Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

This is an extended release oral pill that has to be taken by mouth accompanied by an 8oz glass of water and a meal. Taking this medication on an empty stomach without any water can cause a stomach upset. Sit up or walk around for 10 minutes after taking K-Dur but do not lie down during these 10 minutes. Taking one pill (an entire dosage) at a time can result in stomach upsets. So you can divide the recommended dose into two or four smaller doses to be taken two or four times a day. This may help with your stomach problems. Ask your pharmacist to divide the doses properly. A single dose should not contain more than 20 milliequivalents. You also need to swallow down this pill as whole. Sucking on the tablet, chewing it or consuming it after crushing the tablet can result in side effects. If you cannot swallow a whole tablet at once, split the tablet into two halves, and take each half after another with water. You may even take the tablet by dissolving it in water. Let this mixture sit for a couple of minutes, before stirring it. And then, drink it up at one go. Then fill the glass with another 1oz of water, swirl the water around and drink it instantly. You can use only water for dissolving this drug, stay away from other fluids. Throw out any mixture that you have not consumed.

b.) Missing a dose

When you miss a dose, take it when you remember. However, if it is time to take the next dose, take the medicine at the usual schedule and simply skip the missed dosage. Do not take two doses at once to make up for missed dose.

c.) Overdosing

If you suspect an overdose, contact your provincial poison control centre or local ER immediately. Some of the symptoms of potassium overdose are heart attack, unusually cold skin, irregular or slow heart beat, tingling of feet and hands, confusion, severe dizziness, weakness and muscle cramps.
