Lasix Drug Description

Lasix is the brand name water pill for the generic loop diuretic furosemide. Its function is to prevent the human body from absorbing excessive salt and it forces the excess salt to be discarded from the body through your urine. Lasix can treat a number of conditions including hypertension or high blood pressure, nephrotic syndrome, other kinds of kidney disorders, liver disease, congestive heart failure and oedema or fluid retention.

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Lasix Warnings

If you experience vomiting, diarrhea or perspire heavily or exercise a lot, you should drink plenty of water and other types of healthy fluids. If you are on Lasix, your physician may put you on a diet rich in potassium which means you may have to eat lots of bananas and oranges. Your diet should be low in sodium. To prevent a stomach upset, you should take Lasix with food. If you are currently on sucralfate or Carafate, you should consume Lasix two hours after or two hours before taking sucralfate. Do not use Lasix if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Also inform your physician if you are allergic to sulpha based drugs like septra, gantrisin, Bactrim, azulfidine, sulfisoxazole, sulfasalazine and sulfamethoxazole. If you are breastfeeding or are pregnant or are trying to conceive, remember to tell your doctor. Lasix can cause hypokalaemia or loss of potassium from the body. Long term use of laxatives and large quantities of liquorice and corticosteroids and ACTH or liver diseases can exacerbate your hypokalaemia. If your diarrhea, vomiting, severe nausea or thirst and muscle cramps get out of hand, tell your physician immediately. When you are on a Lasix treatment regimen, your physician will order regular urine and blood tests to check for rise in blood sugar levels. Do not miss these appointments. If you experience constant spinning sensations, ringing in the ears or dizziness or hearing loss, fainting, dizziness or light-headedness, you should immediately inform your physician. Lasix can make your skin photo sensitive, so you should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and sunlamps. Use umbrellas and sunscreens while you are outdoors. Lasix may not be safe for you if you cannot urinate or are allergic to sulpha based drugs or if you suffer from diabetes, lupus, gout, triglycerides, high cholesterol, electrolytic imbalance, cirrhosis, bladder obstruction, enlarged prostate or kidney diseases. Avoid dehydration.

Lasix Side Effects

If you notice any of the following severe symptoms, you should inform your physician immediately:

• Yellow hazy vision
• Jaundice
• Yellowing skin
• Yellowing eyes
• Unusual bruising or bleeding
• Ulcers or sores or white patches on the throat, mouth or lips
• Spots on the skin resembling pimples or blisters
• Stomach pain
• Severe diarrhea
• Fainting
• Light-headedness

• Hearing loss
• Pain in the lower back or pain in your sides
• Cough
• Chills
• Fever
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Problems in urination
• Muscle cramps
• Increased thirst
• Dry mouth
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Tarry, bloody stools
• Red skin rash
• Peeling or blistering of skin
• Stomach cramps
• Loss of appetite
• Wheezing

If you notice any of the following signs of an allergic reaction, you should call your physician right away:

• Trouble in breathing
• Chest tightness
• Tingling or swelling in your throat or mouth
• Swelling in your hands or face
• Hives or itching
