Betaloc Description

Betaloc is an oral medication used to treat a variety of chest and blood pressure problems. Betaloc is also known as Toprol XL, Lopressor, Metoprolol Succinate, Prolomet or Tartrate. The active and prime ingredient is Metoprolol. The medicine belongs to the category of beta-blockers. In general, beta-blockers are used to treat several types of health problems and can treat patients with hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrthymias and in certain cases even in heart failure. It is a small white circular tablet that is administered commonly to heart patients.

The duration differs depending on the extent of the health problem. Patients who are suffering from Angina Pectoris are usually recommended 50mg or 100mg tablets 2 or 3 times a day for a few weeks. Patients who are being treated for migraine attacks are prescribed 50mg or 75mg tablets twice a day. The medication helps in the prevention of future migraines.

b.) Missing a dose

It is normal to miss your medication once in a way. As soon as you realize that you have missed a dose you must immediately have a replacement dose. However, if you realize that you have missed a dose when it is almost time for the next dose then take only one tablet. Never take two Betaloc pills at the same time. c.) Overdosing

It is not advisable to stop the medication suddenly. It is better to reduce the dosage slowly before completely stopping the medication. Betaloc needs to be administered with care. Simple flu medication and cold, cough congestion medicine should also be avoided. Betaloc may affect blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. It is therefore important for diabetic patients to keep a regularly check on their blood sugar levels. Fluctuations can be controlled with increased or decreased use of insulin. Always inform your doctor that you are on Betaloc before you undergo any other treatment or surgery. It is not advisable for Betaloc to be administered to patients suffering from liver or kidney problems. However, if you are on Betaloc medication you must regularly get your liver and kidney checked too. Experienced paediatric doctors should constantly monitor children who are administered Betaloc. Pregnant women should avoid taking Betaloc. Mothers of new born babies should also avoid the medicine as the ingredients may mix with breast milk. If a patient is suffering from severe heart related problems, Betaloc should be administered after thorough consultation.

Betaloc Side Effects

Every medication leads to certain side effects. However, side effects are not necessarily a cause of concern. Depending on the severity of a side effect, immediate medical attention may or may not be required. If you experience changes in vision, confusion, weakness, cold hands and feet, diarrhoea, dizziness, dry mouth or eyes, hair loss or itching and rashes you shouldn’t worry because they are minor symptoms. Other side effects may include light-headedness, muscle aches, nightmares, short term memory loss, stomach pain and unusual tiredness. Some serious side effects include difficulty in breathing, allergic reactions such as hives or rashes, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, chest pain, fainting, pounding in the chest, wheezing, change in eye and skin colour. If symptoms last for a few hours then it is usually not a reason to worry. If they persist for more than a day then you must seek immediate medical attention.

Betaloc may interact with alcohol, anaesthetic agents, anti-depressants, asthma medications, calcium channel blockers, clonidine , digoxin , lidocaine, prazosin , rifampin and serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
