Lupron Depot Description

Lupron Depot is the brand name for the generic drug Leuprolide which is a type of hormone therapy. It belongs to a class of drugs known as LHRH Agonist and is the synthetic version (nonapeptide analogue) of GnRH or gonadotropin releasing hormone.

Lupron Depot is used for treating endometrial, ovarian, breast and prostate cancers. It may also be prescribed for non cancerous medical conditions like benign prostatic hypertrophy, infertility and endometriosis.

Male patients taking this medication may be susceptible to increased risks for cardiovascular diseases, strokes, myocardial infarction or death from cardiac arrest. Physicians should closely monitor their heart conditions. Another fallout of taking Lupron Depot is the increased susceptibility to diabetes development and hyperglycaemia in male patients, which is why their blood glucose levels must be monitored regularly. Other side effects that require medical intervention within 24 hours are memory changes, mood swings, pain or redness or swelling in only one side of the body on the limbs, sudden weight gain, swelling of ankles and feet and extreme fatigue that interferes with self care activities. Some more side effects of Lupron Depot include vomiting, nausea, sore throat, chills, fever, signs of infection, sweating, difficulty in sleeping, constipation, tenderness in breasts, severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the tongue or lips or face or mouth; tightness in your chest, difficulty in breathing, itching, hives, rash, nervousness, depression, delusions, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, slow or fast heartbeat, fainting, burning sensation, bloody urine, vision changes, slurred speech, high blood sugar, increased urination or hunger or thirst, fruity odorous breath, flushing, drowsiness, heart attack or stroke symptoms, severe light headedness, seizures, paralysis or pain in the jaw or chest. Symptoms such as the ones described above require emergency medical care.
