Maxalt RPD
Maxalt RPD Drug Description
Maxalt RPD is the brand name for the generic drug Rizatriptan prescribed for treating migraine headaches that may occur without or with aura. Maxalt or Rizatriptan is a triptan class of drug also known as 5 hydroxytryptamine agonist. The function of Rizatriptan or Maxalt RPD is to offer relief from migraine pain and constrict the dilated blood vessels that cause migraine headaches. Maxalt RPD is a quick acting drug and can start reducing your migraine headache from half an hour onwards. It takes two hours for the medicine to take full effect and offer complete relief. Maxalt is not a headache preventing medication nor should it be used to treat other kinds of headaches. The active ingredient in Maxalt RPD is Rizatriptan benzoate.
Conditions Treated by Maxalt RPD
Rizatriptan or Maxalt is generally prescribed for treating adult migraines and migraine headaches that may or may not be accompanied by aura - dark spots, wavy lines, flashing lights. This drug can offer relief from all the symptoms of migraine attacks such as vomiting, nausea, photo sensitivity, sensitivity to sound, pain and headaches. Maxalt will not minimize the frequency of your migraine attack nor can it prevent future headaches from migraine or cluster headaches. But if you are treated promptly with Maxalt, you may not require treatment with other pain medications and will be able to return to your normal activities quickly.
Maxalt RPD Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
A typical dosage recommendation for adults is around 5 mg. Physicians may even prescribe a starting dose of 10 mg, but the daily dosage should never exceed 20 mg. If you feel that the pain from your headache is different from your usual migraine headaches, discontinue Maxalt and contact your health care provider. Maxalt has to be taken orally with plenty of water or other fluids, preferably after a meal. But you can take it without food as well. You have to consume one single dose of Maxalt immediately after the onset of migraine symptoms. Give a gap of at least 2 hours before taking a second dose.
b.) Missing a Dose
If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose. Skip the missed dose and return to your original, doctor prescribed dosing schedule or consult your health care provider.
c.) Overdosing
If you suspect an overdose, contact your local emergency helpline or poison control helpline or rush the patient to the nearest ER.
