Maxalt (rizatriptan)
Maxalt Description
Maxalt is a drug that is normally prescribed for treating migraine headaches experienced by adults. The drug contains rizatriptan benzoate, which is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine1B/1D (5-HT1B/1D) receptor agonist. Maxalt will heal a migraine being experienced but will not help prevent it from occurring. Available only by prescription, the drug can be obtained as conventional tablets in variants of 5 or 10 mg tablets and also as orally disintegrating tablets known as Maxalt-MLT. Besides providing relief from migraine, the drug also relieves you from symptoms associated with migraine like nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. However, the drug is not a narcotic and does not contain aspirin or caffeine. Maxalt, in some patients, starts reacting on the condition within 30 minutes.
Conditions Treated by Maxalt
The drug is prescribed only after a clear diagnosis of migraine is carried out. Like it is generally assumed, migraine is not just headache but a disease associated with the brain. When migraine is experienced, the pain centers in the brain are activated and this will result in excruciating pain. Furthermore, other centers of the brain get triggered too only to lead to nausea, aura and sensitivity to light and sound. Maxalt helps treat all these symptoms associated with the migraine. Your blood vessels get dilated during migraine but Maxalt narrows them bringing them back to the normal state.
Maxalt Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Maxalt should be taken only when a migraine is experienced. Do not consume it to prevent yourself from experiencing it. If you find difficulty in swallowing conventional tablets, you may take the orally disintegrating tablets, which will dissolve, easily in your mouth. Anyhow, do not consume more than 30mg of Maxalt within 24 hours. Swallow the tablets along with water or some fluids. In case you are not relieved of the migraine even after the first dose, you may take a second dose after consultation with your doctor. However, the dosage can be taken with or without food. If you want best and speedy results, take it in the manner your healthcare provider has prescribed it for you. Any doubts about the dosage, it is better to consult with your physician.
b.) Missing a Dose
In case you miss a prescribed dose, take it as soon as you remember it. But if it is time to take your next dose, just take that one and let go of the missed dose. Never consume two doses together and simply consider the missed dose as a skipped dose. Consuming two doses together will lead to several health problems.
c.) Overdosing
If you happen to take an overdose of Maxalt, the resulting effects will vary based on a few factors like how much of the drug was consumed, or whether it was taken along with other drugs or alcohol. The effects include dizziness, low heart rate, vomiting and hypertension. It is recommended to request for medical attention in case of overdosing. Various supportive treatments are available for a Maxalt overdose including fluids through intravenous line and monitoring of the heart for minimum 12 hours.
