Mirapex (pramipexole)
Mirapex Description
Pramipexole or Mirapex is a non ergoline dopamine agonist that is usually indicated for the treatment of early or initial stage Parkinson’s disease as well as restless legs syndrome. This medication has many of the effects as dopamine, a chemical. This chemical is naturally present in your body. When the levels of dopamine in your brain decline, Parkinson’s disease sets in. Therefore, Mirapex helps to restore the natural balance of dopamine in your brain. Mirapex tablets also treat restless legs syndrome. Mirapex ER or extended release tablets are also available commercially for treating symptoms and signs of both early and advanced Parkinson’s disease.
Mirapex can be used solely or with certain other drugs to treat Parkinson’s disease. This medication is the first agent (Parkinson’s) that is approved by the FDA after Eldepryl, Somerset’s monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Mirapex is manufactured by Pharmacia and Upjohn, Boehringer Ingelheim. The drug will largely improve your ability to bring down shakiness or move. Unsteadiness, slowed movement and stiffness can also be removed. Mirapex should be stored at room temperatures and kept away from heat and moisture.
Conditions Treated By Mirapex
Mirapex or pramipexole dihydrochloride tablets are intended for treating symptoms and signs of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. These tablets are also used to treat moderate to severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS is a condition where the patient has an urge to move legs generally accompanied by or as a result of unpleasant and uncomfortable leg sensations. Such symptoms tend to become worse during inactivity or periods of rest such as sitting or lying. These signs will be partially or entirely relieved by motion such as stretching or walking for as long as the activity prolongs.
There are certain off label uses of Mirapex as well. It is used to treat cluster headache and for counteracting the issues with sexual dysfunction that is experienced by certain users of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants. There have also been pilot studies that are conducted to show the efficacy of Mirapex in treating bipolar disorder. Investigations are also conducted to prove the efficacy of the drug in treating fibromyalgia and clinical depression.
