Mobic Drug Description

Mobic is the brand name of a medicine belonging to a group commonly known as COX-2 inhibiting NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs). It is commonly prescribed to provide relief in painful inflammatory conditions associated with arthritis. Arthritis is the swelling of joints in the body leading to stiffness, pain, severe restriction of movement and soreness in and around the joints. There are different types of arthritis and all the conditions are extremely agonizing and debilitating. The prime ingredient in Mobic is meloxicam. It is available as oral tablets of strength 7.5mg and 15mg and as an oral viscous suspension. Mobic 7.5mg tablets are uncoated, oblong shaped, biconvex, pastel yellow coloured with Boehringer Ingelheim logo embossed on one surface and the alphabet ‘M’ embossed on the other surface. Mobic 15mg tablets look exactly similar but are embossed with ‘15’ on one surface and the alphabet ‘M’ on the other surface. The tablets also contain colloidal silicon dioxide, monohydrate, crospovidone, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium citrate dehydrate and povidone as the inactive ingredients. Both Mobic 7.5mg tablets and 15mg tablets are available in bottles of hundred tablets each. Mobic oral suspension is a viscous, yellowish green coloured oral suspension containing 7.5mg of the primary ingredient meloxicam per 5ml. It also contains colloidal silicon dioxide, sorbitol, hydroxyethylcellulose, glycerol, dihydrate monobasic sodium phosphate, xylitol, sodium benzoate, saccharin sodium, monohydrate citric acid, sterile water and raspberry flavour as the excepients. Mobic is approved by the FDA and available only on prescription. It is presented by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Conditions Treated by Mobic

Mobic is prescribed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in paediatric patients who are above two years of age. Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative disorder of the joints which occurs due to the wear and tear of the cartilages between the joints as a person ages. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and their surrounding areas. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the healthy joints in young children. a.) Typical dosage recommendations

Typical dosage of a medicine depends on age, body weight, medical condition, requirements, tolerance, response and several other factors. In general, typical dosage of Mobic in case of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is 7.5mg once per day. Depending on the response and tolerance level, the dosage may be increased to 15mg once per day. Mobic oral suspension is more suitable for treating paediatric patients suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis than the oral tablets. The ideal dosage is determined by the body weight of the patient though the recommended dosage is 0.125 mg of Mobic per kg of body weight to be administered once per day.

b.) Missing a dose

Mobic is taken once daily so you can take a missed tablet any time of the day. However, it is advisable not to take two or more tablets at the same time in order to make up for a missed dose.

c.) Overdosing

Consult your physician or visit your nearest poison control in case you have overdosed Mobic. Typical overdose symptoms include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, bloody stools, decreased urine, convulsions, fever, coughing up blood or shallow breathing.

Mobic Warnings

Before taking Mobic, discuss thoroughly with your physician all the associated risks and benefits, adverse reactions, dosage, precautions etc so that your treatment is safe and effective. Take the medicine exactly as advised by your physician and contact him/her immediately if you feel uncomfortable after taking the medicine. Elderly patients (above 65 years of age) who are at a risk of myocardial infarction, cardiovascular thrombotic disorders or gastrointestinal disorders like ulceration in the stomach and intestine should be prescribed Mobic with caution. The medication is contraindicated for peri-operative pain management in the event that a coronary artery bypass surgery is required. Inform your physician if you have conceived, plan to do so in the near future or nursing. He will then prescribe Mobic only if the benefits are worth any of the associated risks. Mobic can cause severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which is a fatal condition. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any serious skin rash immediately after taking the medicine. Patients undergoing treatment with Mobic may become anaemic after prolonged use. It is therefore necessary for you to undergo regular tests to monitor your haemoglobin count. Store Mobic in a cool and dry place where it cannot be accessed by pets or children. Never share your medicine with another person without the permission of your physician.
