Motilium (domperidone)
Motilium Description
Developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, domperidone is an antidopaminergic drug known by several trade names. Motilium is one such trade name and can be used orally, intravenously or rectally for suppressing vomiting and nausea. Lactation can also be stimulated with the use of this drug. Certain medical problems can affect the usage of Motilium. Therefore, it is important to inform your doctor in such cases and more so when you have bleeding from your stomach or problems with bowels, pituitary tumor, liver disease or basic medication sensitivity to domperidone.

Motilium or domperidone is a dopamine antagonist that blocks dopamine receptors present in the upper part of your gastrointestinal system. Motilium Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Dosage to be followed will be different for different individuals. For treating upper gastrointestinal motility disorders, the recommended dosage in adults is an oral dose of 10 mg to be taken 3 to 4 times every day at least 15 to 30 minutes before meals. The drug can be taken at bedtime if required. In more severe cases, the dose is also increased to 20 mg taken 3 or 4 times every day.
For treating vomiting and nausea that is associated with Dopamine Agonist Antiparkinsonian Agents, the recommended dosage in adults is an oral dose of 20 mg taken 3 to 4 times every day. For achieving symptom control, higher doses could be required while titration of the drug is happening.
b.) Missing a Dose
If you have missed a dose of Motilium, take it whenever you remember. However, if it is time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take extra doses to make up for the skipped ones.

Drug Interactions With Motilium
When you are prescribed Motilium, you have to inform your doctor if you are taking or planning to take anticholinergic drugs. This is because the latter can nullify the benefits offered by Motilium. The active ingredient in Motilium enhances small intestinal and gastric motility and therefore, accelerates drug absorption from your small bowel but slowing down drug absorption from the stomach. This makes enteric coated or sustained release medication interact with Motilium. Care should be exercised when Motilium is administered along with MAO inhibitors.
