Norpramin
Norpramin Drug Description
Norpramin is the brand name for the generic drug Desipramine used for treating depression and mood disorders. It is a tricyclic antidepressant used for treating cocaine withdrawal symptoms, ADD, ADHD and neuropathic pain. Its function is to inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin (to some extent) and norepinephrine to a greater extent. Norpramin or Desipramine was once the first line of treatment for depression and mood disorders but has become the second resort ever since SSRI antidepressants were introduced. However, Norpramin or Desipramine is highly effective in blocking pain signals that try to ascend to the human brain through the spinal cord pathway.
Conditions Treated by Norpramin
Desipramine or Norpramin may be prescribed for treating substance related disorders, depressive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and neuropathic pain.
Norpramin Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Doctors recommend 100 to 200 mg of Norpramin every day for treating depression in adults. Elderly people or teenagers are usually prescribed with 25 to 100 mg of Norpramin each day. You can either take the dose all together (with food to prevent stomach upsets), preferably at night before going to bed or divide the prescribed dose into several smaller doses which you have to take all through the day.
b.) Missing a Dose
If you take Norpramin at night to prevent drowsiness and dizziness and miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take it next night following your usual dosing schedule. Double doses taken at once can result in death or coma.
c.) Overdosing
Because Norpramin overdose can possibly cause death, coma, cardiac shock, convulsions or other extremely fatal symptoms, you should take the patient to your nearest ER or call your local poison control helpline or local emergency number if you suspect an overdose.
Norpramin Warnings
Patients who have a family history of sudden cardiac deaths or dysrhythmias should use caution before taking Norpramin or Desipramine hydrochloride. Physicians in turn should screen patients for cardiac conduction disturbances and cardiac dysrhythmias before prescribing this medication. Overdoses of Norpramin can likely cause death due to cardiac dysrhythmias preceded by seizures. So patients should follow the dosage instructions very carefully.
