Nuvaring (ethinyl estradiol/etonogestrel)

Nuvaring Description

Nuvaring is a medicinal drug containing a combination of the female hormones ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel. This mixture of female hormones prevents ovulation which is the act of the ovary releasing an egg. The mixture works by changing the lining of the uterus and the cervical mucus thereby making it much more difficult for the sperm to get to the uterus and more difficult for an egg which has been fertilized to attach itself to the uterus.

Nuvaring is available in the form of a plastic ring made of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer which is flexible and releases a small dosage of estrogen and progestin over a period of three weeks.

If the Nuvaring happens to fall out by accident during the three week course, rinse it carefully with warmed water and insert it again into the right place. If it happens to slide down into the lower parts of the vagina, use your finger to adjust it. Make sure that you do not leave a Nuvaring out for more than three hours.

c.) Overdosing

Nuvaring will not help in preventing pregnancy if you use it only while engaging in sexual intercourse. You have to keep it on at all times for the entire three week period.
