Parlodel

Parlodel Drug Description

Parlodel is the brand name for the generic drug Bromocriptine which is a kind of ergoline derivative. Diabetes type 2, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, hyperprolactinaemia, Parkinson’s disease, pituitary tumours, acromegaly, hypogonadism, galactorrhea, female infertility and amenorrhea can all be treated by this dopamine agonist. Parlodel works by minimising growth hormone levels (in acromegaly patients), by encouraging the release of dopamine receptors in specific parts of the brain (Parkinson’s disease) and by inhibiting prolactin release from the pituitary gland.

Conditions Treated by Parlodel

Parlodel or Bromocriptine Mesylate is usually prescribed for controlling the level of blood sugar in individuals suffering from diabetes type 2. This ergot alkaloid is also prescribed for stopping the production of breast milk and for treating pituitary tumours, Parkinson’s disease, overproduction of growth hormone and menstrual problems.

Parlodel Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Parlodel is sold in the form of 5 mg or 2.5 mg capsules and tablets respectively. Your starting dose may be one 2.5 mg tablet or a half tablet to be taken once each day. After every 2 to 7 days, another 2.5 mg tablet may be added to your dosage. Normally, adults have to take 2.5 to 15 mg of Parlodel daily. Paediatric patients may require 2.5 mg to 10 mg of Parlodel each day, but paediatric dosages should be decided by physicians.

b.) Missing a Dose

If you miss a dose of Parlodel, you can consume that missed dose if you haven’t crossed 4 hours since the time of the original dosing. But if it is already past four hours or if it is time already for your next dose, you should forget about the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses or extra doses to compensate for missed doses.

c.) Overdosing

Parlodel overdose can lead to symptoms such as repeated yawning, vomiting, sweating, severely low blood pressure, pallor, nausea, lethargy, hallucinations, feeling unwell, drowsiness, dizziness, delusions, constipation and confusion. If you suspect a Parlodel overdose, contact your nearest ER or local poison control helpline or call your physician.
