Patanol Eye Drops Description

The antihistamine ophthalmologic agent Patanol is the brand name for the generic drug Olopatadine that is taken through the ophthalmic route. It is available in the form of a solution that has to be administered on the eyes for temporarily preventing eye itching which is a result of allergic conjunctivitis. Olopatadine ophthalmic eye solution or Patanol Eye Drops act on mast cells and prevent the release of allergy causing substances. This is a prescription eye drop.

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Dosage recommendations vary from patient to patient depending on their needs and strength of the solution. Your physician will adjust or alter or decide on your dose. He will also decide how frequently you need to administer the solution. However, generally the average recommended dose for kids above 3 years of age and adults is one drop of Patanol 0.1 percent solution in both the eyes twice daily. Give a gap of 6 to 8 hours between two doses. If you are using the Patanol 0.2 percent solution, you have to use one drop for each affected eye only once daily. How long you need to continue with this medication will be decided by your doctor. In case of patients who are less than three years of age, the dosage and usage will be determined by the physician. You should store this eye solution below 25 degree Celsius at room temperature. Discard the bottle a month after opening it.
 Do not use Patanol Eye Drops right before a shower or a bath or before going swimming. Contact lens wearers should be extra cautious about using these eye drops. Even after giving a 10 minute gap, if you find that your eyes are red or swollen or irritated, you should not wear your contact lenses. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before using these eye drops. While using Patanol, do not take other medications intended for the eyes unless your doctor recommends them. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your physician before using Patanol Eye Drops. Do not use these eye drops if you are allergic to Patanol ingredients or to Olopatadine. If the eye drop solution has become cloudy or grainy or shows particles in it or has altered its colour, throw it out. Contact your physician and ask for a new prescription. To prevent contamination of the solution, do not let the tip of the dropper to touch the hands, fingers, eyes or any surface. A contaminated solution can infect your eyes and result in severe eye damage or loss of vision. If you suffer from any kind of severe eye irritation, crusting, drainage, stinging, burning, swelling or redness, stop the use of this solution and seek medical intervention. Patanol Eye Drops are harmful for a foetus. So if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant or suspect that you might be pregnant, inform your physician promptly. Inform your physician if you suffer from or had ever suffered from eye infections in the past.

Patanol Eye Drops Side Effects

The commonest side effects of Patanol Eye Drops are weakness, tearing, sore throat, runny nose, redness in the eye, itching, headache, head congestion, eye ache, dryness of the eye, change in taste, stinging or burning sensation in the eye. You may even feel that there is something foreign in your eye which may cause psychological eye discomfort. If these symptoms become bothersome or persist, you may consult your physician. Severe side effects of Patanol Eye Drops include swelling of the tongue, lips, face or mouth; chest tightness, difficulty in breathing, itching, hives and rash which are all severe allergic reactions. Some other side effects reported with the use of Patanol Eye Drops are headaches, ocular Pruritus, pain, lid edema, keratitis, hyperaemia, foreign body sensation, dry eye, conjunctivitis, stinging and burning, blurred vision, infection, increased cough, flu syndrome, back pain, asthenia, pharyngitis and cold syndrome, taste perversion, nausea, sinusitis, rhinitis, unusual weakness or tiredness, insomnia, swelling of eyelid, sweating, shivering, redness of insides of the eyelids, loss of appetite, pains and aches in the muscle, diarrhoea and ocular hypersensitivity reaction.
