Plendil

Plendil Drug Description

Plendil is an oral medication tablet which falls under the category of calcium channel blockers. It is primarily made of Felodipine, which is a yellowish-white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water and ethanol. The tablets are available in different sizes and doctors administer them depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. In addition to Felodipine, each tablet also contains inactive ingredients like hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose, sodium stearyl, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide among other ingredients. Slightly larger tablets will have larger quantities of the similar ingredients. Each 2.5 mg tablet, 5 mg tablet and 10 mg tablet come in unique colours and compositions.

Conditions Treated by Plendil

Plendil is often used in the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. The tablet is effective in lowering blood pressure thereby helping protect patients against other blood pressure related health problems like stroke, fatal or non-fatal cardiovascular events and myocardial events. The medicine may also be prescribed for other purposes by doctors. If you do not suffer from blood pressure problems and have still been administered Plendil, please ask your doctor his reasons before choosing to discontinue the medication. The tablet typically works by relaxing the muscles around the heart and blood vessels. While the control of high blood pressure is also attributed to other factors like diabetes management, regular exercise, limited sodium and salt in the diet, etc patients are usually given drugs like Plendil to help hasten the process. It is normally safe to administer Plendil with other hypersensitivity drugs. In most cases patients anyway need a combination of one or more medicines to combat blood pressure related problems.

Plendil Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

The normal starting dose is 5mg per day. Depending on a patient’s reaction to the medicine, severity of the medical condition and medical history, doctors may change the dosage subsequently. In most cases, doctors avoid recommending more than 10 mg a day to patients. In cases where patients are administered more than 10 mg a day, it may result in effective lowering of the blood pressure but increased vasodilatory events. The medicine can be taken with a light meal or without food and just plain water. Patients should have the tablet whole and avoid crushing or chewing it.

b.) Missing a dose

Missing a blood pressure medication dose may result in general discomfort and reoccurrence of high blood pressure symptoms. In cases where patients have realized that they have missed a dose when four hours or more are left for the next one, they must have a replacement tablet. However, it is safer to consult a doctor before taking a replacement tablet. In some cases, doctors may advise against replacing a missed dose and might advise patients to wait until the next dose is due. Under no circumstance should a patient take two tablets at the same time, it might lead to severe health problems or an overdose.

c.) Overdosing

If a patient has more than the required quantity of the medication within a short span of time, it might lead to an overdose. This can result in severe, even fatal problems. The tablet should be taken with care and exactly as prescribed by the doctor. When overdose is suspected, patients should be hospitalized immediately.

Plendil Warnings

Do not take Plendil if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. If you suffer from liver disease or heart problems, it is better to avoid the medication or take lower doses. In some cases if a patient absolutely requires the medicine then it can be administered under extreme care in high quantities. Share all details of any other medicinal drug you are on before taking Plendil. Other drugs may interact with your existing medication causing more complications. Once you begin taking Plendil, visit your doctor regularly to get your blood pressure checked. Do not discontinue the medication without prior consultation. While you may feel that your blood pressure is back to normal, often that is not the case. It takes several months’ sometimes even years to moderate blood pressure related and heart problems. If you are absolutely sure that your symptoms are better, consult your doctor. Based on your medical examinations your doctor may agree to lower the dosage. It is important to maintain good dental hygiene while on the medication. The tablet may cause mild swelling of the gums which may lead to other problems later. However this is avoidable with good dental hygiene. Elderly patients should be given lower dosages of the medicine and should be under strict observation throughout treatment. Patients with liver problems should ideally be administered lower doses of the drug.
