Pristiq Description

Pristiq or desvenlafaxine is an SNRI or a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor used to treat mental depression in adults. This extended release tablet is meant for oral administration and contains a structurally novel SNRI known as desvenlafaxine succinate. This drug can treat panic disorders, social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorders and major mental depressions.

Pristiq Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

You have to take one Pristiq pill once a day to relieve symptoms of depression. The usual dosage recommendation is a 50 mg pill to be taken once daily with lots of water before or after a meal at the same time each day. Patients with kidney problems may be prescribed a 50 mg pill every alternate day.

b.) Missing a dose

Take your missed dose as soon as you can remember. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose. If it is already time for next dose, consume that next dose at your usual schedule and skip the missed dose.

c.) Overdosing

Symptoms of Pristiq overdose include tingly feeling, numbness, fast heart rate, diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth agitation, dizziness and headache. If you think you have overdosed on this medication contact your local ER immediately.

Pristiq Warnings

Patients taking Pristiq are advised against consumption of alcohol as it can impair psychomotor skills, thinking abilities and judgement beside inducing depression of the central nervous system. Contact your doctor immediately in case of a hazardous alcohol interaction with Pristiq. If you are allergic to Effexor or desvenalfaxine you cannot take Pristiq. Do not take Pristiq if you are already using an MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Give yourself a 14 day gap after quitting your MAOI. After a fortnight you can start taking Pristiq under medical supervision. Do not take Pristiq and Effexor together. Patients younger than 24 years of age may experience suicidal thoughts when taking this antidepressant drug towards the beginning.
