Proglycem Drug Description

Proglycem is the brand name for the generic drug Diazoxide, a Thiazide related chemical compound intended for glucose regulation. This antihypoglycaemic medication prevents insulin release from the pancreas and treats low blood sugar.

Conditions Treated by Proglycem

Proglycem is prescribed for treating low blood sugar levels or hypoglycaemia in adults, children and infants when caused by pancreatic cancer or other pancreatic diseases. This medicine has proved to be useful in treating hypoglycaemia caused by hyperinsulinism.

Proglycem Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

For newborns and infants, the typical dosage recommendations vary between 15 and 8 mg/kg that have to be divided equally into 3 or 2 doses, to be taken every 12 hours or 8 hours. Many physicians recommend 10 mg/kg of Proglycem each day that has to be divided into 3 equal doses. Take the doses at 8 hour intervals. For children and adults, the usual prescribed dosage is between eight and three mg/kg to be taken twice or thrice daily (in equally divided amounts) after every 12 hours or 8 hours. Doctors prescribe higher doses for patients suffering from refractory hypoglycaemia. Normal starting doses can be 3 mg/kg for each day or 200 mg for an average adult each day.

b.) Missing a Dose

You should set alarms in your phone to remind yourself of your regular twice or thrice a day dosing schedule. But if you do forget to take a dose, do not take double doses all at once to make up for a missed dose. Skip the missed dose in that case and go back to your original dosing schedule.

c.) Overdosing

If you suspect an overdose, call your local emergency number/health care provider and rush the patient to the nearest ER.

Avoid Proglycem at all costs if you are allergic to Thiazide drugs including Diazoxide or use phenytoin (diphenylhydantoins) or warfarin. Infants receiving Proglycem are susceptible to water retention that can lead to heart ailments. Do not use glipizide, Fosphenytoin, dofetilide and Proglycem together.
