Renova Cream Drug Description

Renova cream is the brand name for the topical medication Tretinoin cream prescribed for improving the colour of the skin and for minimising skin roughness, wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Tretinoin is a type of retinoid that stimulates skin cell growth. It cannot reverse the signs of ageing that have been caused by excessive sun exposure nor can it repair skin damaged by the sun.

Renova cream is effective in minimising facial skin roughness, facial mottled hyperpigmentation and fine facial wrinkles. Sometimes, dermatologists prescribe Renova cream for treating skin conditions such as acne. Renova cream works excellently for some patients while others do not benefit much from Renova.

Renova Cream Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

You should apply a very small quantity of Renova cream (5 mm in diameter or a pearl sized/pea sized drop) on the affected areas. Rub lightly so that the cream covers all the affected areas and leaves a light film. Apply the cream in the evening or before bedtime, only once a day. Before applying Renova cream on your face, you should wash your face clean with a mild soap free cleanser or face wash, pat dry your skin and give a gap of at least twenty to thirty minutes. Then you can apply this medication as directed by your physician. You cannot wash your face or use other kinds of skin ointments and products in the next one hour after applying Renova.

b.) Missing a Dose

If you forget to apply this topical medication, you can either wait till the next day or you can apply it as soon as you remember.

c.) Overdosing

Symptoms of Renova overdose include skin discomfort, peeling and excessive redness. Renova Cream Warnings

You must avoid sun exposure and take great care of your skin while using Renova cream. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and moisturising lotions and creams to prevent skin dryness and phototoxicity. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, inform your physician. You should use Renova cream during pregnancy only if your doctor prescribes it. But it is best avoided during pregnancy. The ingredients in Renova cream can pass into breast milk and pose a health risk to a lactating infant. If you are breastfeeding your baby, consult your physician who will advise you on the next course of action. Applying lots of this cream on your face all at once or using this cream more often than needed/prescribed will not achieve improved or faster results. Rather, it may result in pain, discomfort, peeling and redness. Renova cream should not be used on skin that is broken, sun burned, scraped, cut or affected by eczema. Do not swallow this medication and if you do, contact your local poison control centre. Keep this cream away from your eyes and eye zone. If it accidentally gets into your eyes, wash your eyes with plenty of water. If your eyes become red or the irritation persists, contact your physician. Also remember to wash your hands thoroughly after applying Renova cream on your face. Renova will improve your facial appearance slowly. It takes at least six months to notice visible improvements. If your dermatologist has prescribed Renova cream for treating acne, you may at first experience a lot of breakouts followed by a marked improvement. Renova cream is not very effective in patients who have a medium skin complexion or a dark skin complexion; patients who are above 50 years of age; patients suffering from skin cancer and in patients with visible actinic keratosis. Do not use Renova cream if you are allergic to Tretinoin or to any of the ingredients inside Renova or if you are highly photosensitive or are sun burned.

Renova Cream Side Effects

The most common side effects reported with the use of Renova cream on the face are:

• Pruritus
• Erythema
• Stinging
• Burning
• Dry skin
• Peeling
• Severe skin irritation
• Severe local irritation
• Hyperpigmentation
• Hypopigmentation

In many cases, patients are advised to temporarily discontinue the use of Renova cream. Sometimes doctors prescribe a mild topical corticosteroid for alleviating the skin irritation. Approximately four percent patients are forced to discontinue using Tretinoin cream as the adverse reactions become unmanageable. If you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction, stop using Renova cream and seek immediate medical intervention:

• Swelling of the throat, lips, face or tongue
• Difficulty in breathing
• Hives

• Dryness
• Swelling
• Redness
• Itching
• Tingling
• Stinging
• Warmth
• Burning

Renova Cream Drug Interactions

Patients who are using Tretinoin or Renova cream should use waxing creams and lotions, hair removal creams, electrolytic procedures, permanent wave solutions, lime or spices, astringents, skin products with alcohol, drying cosmetics, cleansers, shampoos, abrasive or medicated soaps and concomitant topical medications with caution. These products may cause skin irritation if they are used in conjunction with treatment with Renova cream. Certain medications such as photosensitisers can interact with Renova cream. Do not use sulphonamides, phenothiazines, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines and thiazides along with Renova as it may lead to augmented phototoxicity. The following drug interactions have been commonly reported:

• Salicylic acid and skin products containing salicylic acid
• Resorcinol and products with this substance
• Sulphur and sulphur containing substances
• Benzoyl peroxide and medications/topical applications with benzoyl peroxide
• Perphenazine
• Promethazine
• Fluphenazine
• Prochlorperazine
• Chlorpromazine
• Antibiotics
• Sulpha drugs
• Demeclocycline
• Doxycycline
• Minocycline
• Diuretics or water pills
