Rowasa Enema (Mesalamine Rectal Suspension)
Rowasa Enema Description
Rowasa enema is the brand name for the generic drug Mesalamine used to treat moderate to mild rectal or colon inflammation and bowel diseases. Rowasa enema prevents the production or secretion of substances causing colon or rectal inflammation and that is how it works. It is a 5 ASA or a five aminosalicylic acid.
Conditions Treated by Rowasa Enema
Mesalamine rectal or Rowasa is used by health care professionals to treat proctosigmoiditis, proctitis and distal ulcerative colitis as well as for other purposes. This drug can prevent ulcerative colitis symptoms from reappearing. Basically the purpose of Mesalamine is to target a body substance which causes diarrhea, tissue damage and inflammation. a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Empty out your bladder and bowel as clearly as you can before pushing the Rowasa enema through your rectal hole. Lie down for 15 to 30 minutes and hold it in as hard as you can. You will feel an intense urge to empty your bowel after 5 minutes, but you cannot use the toilet. It is best to use this enema at bedtime and you should try to keep the suppository inside your body for at least 8 hours. The typical dosage is a 60 ml unit of 1 rectal instillation (4 gram) that has to be inserted once daily. Depending on sigmoidoscopic findings and symptoms, the therapy usually stretches from 3 weeks to 6 weeks.
b.) Missing a Dose
If it is already time for your next dose, take the next dose at your usual schedule and skip the missed dose. If you forget to take a dose, use the Rowasa enema as soon as you can. Do not overdose to compensate for missed doses.
c.) Overdosing
If you overdose or swallow Rowasa enema accidentally, contact your nearest ER or call your poison control center immediately.
Rowasa Enema Warnings
- Rowasa enema is not to be taken orally. This rectal suppository has to be pushed inside your body through your rectum.
- If you experience bloody diarrhea, headache, fever, severe cramping or severe stomach ache, stop using this suppository and contact your medical practitioner immediately.
- If you take sulfinpyrazone or probenecid, if you are under 18 years of age, if you were live vaccinated in the last 6 weeks against influenza or varicella or if you are suffering from chicken pox or the flu, you should not use Rowasa enema.
- Skip the use of Rowasa enema if you are allergic to salicylates like aspirin, nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as naproxen or ibuprofen or to ingredients inside Rowasa enema.
- You should not share this suppository with others and keep it out of the reach of children.
If you accidentally take the drug in spite of these conditions, immediately contact your doctor. Rowasa enema can adversely affect a few medical conditions. If you have any of the following conditions, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first before using Rowasa enema.
- If you suffer from chicken pox or the flu
- If you are breast feeding or trying to conceive or if you are pregnant

- Food allergies, substance allergies, sulphite allergies, medicine allergies, sulfasalazine allergy
- If you consume dietary supplements, herbal concoctions, non-prescription or prescription drugs
Rowasa Enema Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Leg pain
- Joint pain
- Gas
- Pain in the rectum when inserting the nozzle of the bottle
- Rectal pain

Some drugs can interfere with the efficacy of Rowasa enema. If you consume or use any of the following medicines, inform your health care provider.
- Rowasa enema can minimize the efficacy of drugs such as: ACE or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors such as Enalapril , Sulfinpyrazone, Spironolactone , Probenecid , beta blockers such as Propranolol and anticoagulants such as Warfarin or Heparin .
- Rowasa enema can increase the side effects of drugs such as Valporic acid , sulfonylureas like Glipizide ; meglitinide antidiabetics like Repaglinide ; insulin and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as Acetazolamide .
- Corticosteroids such as Prednisone can minimize the efficacy of Rowasa enema.
- Taking gingko biloba extracts along with Rowasa enema can increase the risk of side effects such as bleeding.
