Singulair (montelukast)
Singulair Description
Singulair is a prescription medicine for preventing attacks of asthma and for treating long term asthma problems in children and adults. Indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms are also treated by Singulair. The drug blocks substances in your body called leukotrienes. Singulair does not comprise of any steroids. The primary ingredient of this drug is Montelukast. Merck developed this drug in Montreal and hence the name is inspired from its birth place. Singulair does not treat acute asthma attacks due to its method of operation but it also does not interfere with other medications of asthma such as theophylline. Montelukast or popularly known by its trade name Singulair is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that is used for maintaining asthma treatment and for relieving seasonal allergy symptoms. The drug is used to prevent attacks of asthma in children and adults. It relieves the patient (in both adults and children) from sneezing and running nose caused by allergies. Singulair is also used to put a check on exercise induced bronchoconstriction. This condition refers to narrowing of air passages in lungs in teenagers and adults who are 15 years of age or older.
If you take the drug for other reasons, you do not have to take it again for this problem. Extra doses should not be taken. The drug also helps to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis or allergic rhinitis in patients who are 2 years of age or older. Infants who are 6 months of age are also administered this drug for perennial allergic rhinitis. Singulair Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Singulair should be taken only as prescribed by your doctor. Avoid taking small or large amounts or for an extended period of time unless advised. Singulair is usually taken only once every day in the evening. This helps to prevent allergy or asthma symptoms. The medication can also be taken for exercise induced bronchoconstriction at least two hours before exercise and do not take the next dose for the next 24 hours at least. Taking this drug for either one of these problems will address both. Adolescents and adults over 15 years of age are generally advised to take one 10 mg tablet.
Patients between 6 and 14 years of age can take one 5 mg chewable tablet. One 4 mg chewable tablet can be given for kids between 2 and 5 years of age. Oral granules are administered to infants who are between 12 and 23 months of age. The chewable tablet should be completely chewed before swallowing. Oral granules must be used within 15 minutes from opening the pack. Oral granules, when administering to babies can be mixed with baby formula or breast milk.
b.) Missing a Dose
When you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, do not take the skipped one. Extra medicine should not be consumed to compensate for the missed dose.
c.) Overdosing
Although there have been no proven reports that demonstrate the harmful effects of overdosing with Singulair, it is always better to stick to your doctor’s prescription. The only reported side effects have been vomiting, headache, thirst and abdominal pain.
Singulair Warnings
If you are allergic to montelukast, it is better to avoid Singulair. Singulair is not usually prescribed to treat acute asthma attacks. Appropriate rescue medication is necessary in such cases. Patients who have sensitivity to aspirin should avoid non steroidal anti inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) or aspirin while taking this drug. Stay cautious to be prepared for neuropsychiatric events since these risks are associated with consumption of the drug. 5mg and 4mg chewable Singulair tablets contain phenylalanine and therefore if you have phenylketonuria, consult your doctor before using this form of the medication.
Singulair has not been proven harmful to unborn babies. However, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Although effects of the drug, on babies through breast milk, are not known, informing your doctor prior to taking the drug if you are breastfeeding is critical. Singulair should not be substituted for oral or inhaled corticosteroids. While you are taking Singulair, avoid taking NSAIDs such as piroxicam, naproxen, nabumetone, meloxicam, indomethacin, etodolac, diclofenac, ibuprofen as well as aspirin.
