Levitra ODT Drug Description

Levitra ODT is the brand name of a medication that is commonly prescribed as a treatment for impotence. Impotence is one of the major disorders affecting the male population throughout the world. In normal males, erection of the penis is caused by a surge of blood which suffuses the organ resulting in its enlargement. The arteries increase in size and deliver more blood to the penis while at the same time, the veins decrease in size so that flow of blood away from the penis is arrested. Levitra ODT (Orally Disintegrating Tablets) is however available only in strength of 10mg. Each tablet is round, film-coated, orange coloured and embossed with ‘BAYER’ on one side and the strength of the tablet on the other side. Apart from the active ingredients, Levitra also contains magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol, red ferric oxide and yellow ferric oxide as the excipients. Levitra ODT is used as a treatment for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) in male patients. It is a condition where erection is not attained or cannot be sustained for normal sexual intercourse. Sexual stimulation results in a production and discharge of nitric oxide inside the penis which triggers the release of the enzyme guanylate cyclise. This enzyme then produces cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which is directly responsible for the increase and decrease of the arteries and veins leading to and from the penis. Levitra ODT extends the action of cGMP and prevents its destruction by another enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) so that engorgement of the penis is prolonged.

Levitra ODT Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

The usual dose of Levitra ODT is one tablet per day to be taken at least an hour before intercourse. This is also the starting dose for patients who intend to use the regular Levitra tablets (2.5mg/5mg/10mg/20mg). Orally disintegrating formulations work faster as they are better absorbed and produce better results. Therefore, only one Levitra ODT tablet should be taken in one day. Depending on adverse reactions or their absence with Levitra ODT, your doctor may replace ODT tablets with regular tablets and reduce or increase your dosage.

b.) Missing a dose

Levitra ODT is a need-based medication and there is no scope of missing a dose. You have to take the medication sixty minutes prior to sexual intercourse for best results.

c.) Overdosing

There should strictly be a 24 hour gap between subsequent doses of Levitra ODT tablets. In case you have overdose inadvertently, call your physician or local poison treatment centre immediately. Typical overdose symptoms include abnormal vision, back pain or muscle pain. Standard supportive procedures are usually followed in case of overdosing by Levitra ODT.

Levitra ODT Warnings

Your physician must know if you have any natural deformity of the penis like Peyronie's disease, cavernosal fibrosis or angulation or have any previous history of prolonged unnatural erection (erection lasting for more than four hours). Levitra ODT is not for use in women and paediatric patients. Geriatric patients above 65 years of age should start with 5mg of Levitra regular tablets. Since Levitra ODT can make you dizzy, do not drive or do any work that requires attention immediately after taking the medicine. Always get up slowly from a lying position and avoid taking alcohol. Store Levitra ODT at room temperature (150C-300C) in a cool and dark place away from the reach of children and pets.

Levitra ODT Side Effects

Side effects are common to all medicines though these may not be visible with equal intensity in all patients. The symptoms can be temporary or permanent, severe or mild. Typical adverse effects of Levitra ODT include flushing, dizziness, back pain, muscle pain, headache, runny nose, stomach upset or indigestion.
