Tiazac

Tiazac Drug Description

Tiazac belongs to the Diltiazem group of drugs that are better known as CCBs (calcium channel blockers). Actually Tiazac is just one of the brand or trade names of the Diltiazem compound. Diltiazem is the generic name for all forms of CCBs that are manufactured and marketed under different brand names like Cardizem, Viazem, Angiozem, Filazem, and Zandil, and so on. The Tiazac brand of calcium channel blocker is produced by Biovail Laboratories International SRL which is also the registered trademark owner, and Sun Pharmaceuticals also has USFDA approval to manufacture the drug. Tiazac works as an effective vasodilator as it boosts blood circulation and checks hypertension. It is also used for treating angina pectoris, tachycardia, bradycardia, and arrhythmic conditions. The Diltiazem in the Tiazac medication inhibits the action of CYP3A4 enzyme and in turn is metabolized by it. Being a very powerful vasodilator, it dilates the blood vessels in the heart thereby improving blood circulation. It is also instrumental in normalizing the heart rate when it goes down abnormally (bradycardia) and also when it shoots up (tachycardia). Tiazac’s inotropic, chronotropic, and dromotropic properties help in slowing down the circulation and conduction of blood in atria-ventricular node which in turn brings down the consumption of myocardial oxygen. Diltiazem hydrochloride is the main active ingredient in Tiazac and has a powdery and crystalline form. It is off-white to white in colour and tastes bitter. The other components include Titanium Dioxide, Talc, Simethicone, Polysorbate, Povidone, Sucrose Stearate and Magnesium Stearate, Iron Oxide, Ethyl Acrylate, Gelatin and Hypromellose etc. It is available in tablets in immediate release (30, 60, 90, and 120 mg) and extended release ?(both tablets and capsules) types (60, 90,120, 180, 240, 300, 360, and 420 mg). It is also available as injections. The tablets and capsules should be stored in a cool dry place and injections should be stored in a refrigerator.

Conditions treated by Tiazac

Tiazac is particularly prescribed by GPs and chest specialists for the treatment and healing of hypertension, and also for coping with angina pectoris. Lowering the rate of excessive blood pressure helps check heart attacks and strokes, congestive heart failures, and renal problems. It is also known to allay migraine attacks. Tiazac is specifically recommended for different types of arrhythmias including supra-ventricular tachycardia and anginas including stress induced angina, variable angina, and unstable angina (pre-infarctions and infarctions).

In the case of hypertensive patients, the dosage has to be worked out and regulated by the method of titration to meet the specific needs of a patient. When used in isolation, the starting dose usually varies from 120-240 mg administered once everyday. Depending on the medical condition of the patient and susceptibility to drug, a maximum dose of 540 mg can be given once daily. For angina patients, the normal starting dose is 120-180 mg given once on a daily basis that can be increased to 540 mg. Titration for restructuring dosage levels can be performed every 1-2 weeks.
