Uloric Description

Uloric is the brand name of a medicine that acts as an inhibitor of Xanthine oxidase in order to reduce uric acid production in the human body. Uric acid is a naturally occurring substance that is present in the body as a result of purine (a muscle protein) metabolism. Since humans lack the enzyme uricase needed for uric acid breakdown, the acid is normally excreted through the kidneys or intestines. However, certain physical conditions results in an excessive accumulation of this insoluble acid in the joints, tendons and cartilages leading to gout. The primary ingredient in Uloric is febuxostat. It also contains other inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, sodium croscarmellose, silicone dioxide, hydroxypropyl cellulose, opadry II green and magnesium stearate. The medication is presented as tablets in two strengths of 40mg and 80mg though in Canada, the 80mg variant is commonly prescribed in gouty conditions. This light green coloured FDA approved tablet is tear-shaped with ‘TAP’ embossed on one side and ‘80’ embossed on the other side. It is presented by Takeda Canada, Inc. and is available in HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottles containing thirty tablets each.

Conditions Treated by Uloric

Uloric is prescribed as a treatment for chronic gout associated with hyperuricaemia or the excessive accumulation of uric acid in the joints, leading to gouty conditions. The medicine works by lowering the levels of uric acid which is achieved by inhibiting the production of xanthine oxidase, an enzyme associated with purine metabolism. It is not prescribed as a treatment for high levels of uric acid in the absence of gout.

Uloric Dosage Information

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

The standard dose of Uloric is 80mg once daily or as advised by your medical caregiver. The medicine should be taken orally and about the same time everyday so that you don’t miss out on a particular dose. It can be taken before or after your meals and you can also take antacids if required. Your physician may alter the dose depending on your tolerance level and response to treatment. After starting your treatment with Uloric, you may see a flare-up in your gouty conditions which is due to a reduction in the level of serum uric acids. Speak to your physician for remedial methods but do not stop taking the medication. Your physician may then co-prescribe other medications like NSAIDs to reduce the pain.

b.) Missing a dose

In case you have missed taking your daily dose of Uloric, it is best to take the tablet as soon as you remember. However, taking the medicine in excess is not recommended so do not take two tablets at a time in order to compensate for a missed dose. Rather, it is better to skip a missed dose if you are about to take the next tablet as scheduled.

c.) Overdosing

Uloric is a relatively safe medicine and no life-threatening conditions have been reported with overdosing. In case you have overdose, contact your physician or nearest poison control centre for symptomatic treatment and support.
