Uroxatral (alfuzosin)
Uroxatral Drug Description
Uroxatral is a medicinal drug that belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. It contains the chemical alfuzosin, which is an Alpha 1 receptor antagonist used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.
Uroxatral helps relax the muscles of the prostate gland as well as the bladder neck, thus making urination an easier process. It is also used to improve urination among men who suffer from the aforementioned benign prostatic hyperplasia also known as enlarged prostate.

It is extremely important that you take Uroxatral exactly as your doctor prescribes. Your doctor may decide to change the Uroxatral dosage occasionally in order to ensure that you reap maximum benefit from using the drug.
Usually, Uroxatral is taken once every 24 hours and just after eating a meal, thus you should also keep in mind that you should not be taking the drug on an empty stomach.
Instead of breaking, chewing or crushing the extended-release capsule, swallow it whole. Breaking the pill open can cause an excessive amounts of the drug to be released in one go, destroy the prolonged effect of the drug and increase the onset of side effects.

b) Missing a dose

Uroxatral Warnings
Uroxatral can prove to be harmful if you happen to be suffering from certain conditions. It is important that you avoid taking Uroxatral if you suffer from severe liver disease. You should also consult a doctor or a pharmacist for dose adjustments or special tests to make sure it is safe for you to take the drug if you happen to be suffering from the following medical conditions:
• Liver disease • A family or personal history of suffering from Long QT syndrome • Coronary artery disease (that is, hardened arteries) • Kidney disease • Low blood pressure (including low blood pressure caused by certain medication) • Angina or chest pain • Prostate cancer • Trouble in breathing
Uroxatral can also have a negative impact on your pupils at the time of cataract surgery. Hence, it is important that you inform your eye surgeon well before the surgery that you are on this medication. Do not however stop taking Uroxatral prior to surgery if your surgeon doesn’t warn you against it.
Even though Uroxatral is not generally used by women, if you are a woman on this drug and you happen to be pregnant or breast feeding your child, it is best to be safe and inform your doctor about the drug even though Uroxatral is not known to harm children.
Uroxatral also has the tendency to impair your reflexes, reaction and thinking abilities. Hence, if you are using Uroxatral, it is imperative that you be especially careful while driving, using heavy machinery or doing anything else that needs you to be especially alert at all times. Uroxatral can also cause increased dizziness. Hence, in order to prevent feeling dizzy, minimize the amount of time you spend standing or engaging in physical activity especially excessive exercise. Also limit the amount of time you spend outside in sultry weather. Another way of reducing dizziness is to get up leisurely and steadily from a lying or prone position. Additionally, you should also limit your alcohol consumption to a minimum while being on Uroxatral
Lastly, you should avoid taking Uroxatral if you are allergic to alfuzosin, the chemical contained in the drug.
Uroxatral Side Effects
As with most other drugs, Uroxatral has a number of side effects. If you exhibit allergic reactions to Uroxatral such as hives, swelling of tongue, swelling of lips, inflammation of throat, swelling of face, appearance of rashes, excessive itching and difficulty in breathing, you should seek emergency medical help right away and consult your doctor immediately.
The more serious side effects of using Uroxatral include:
• Nausea • Clay colored stool • Extreme dizziness • Stomach ache • Loss of appetite • Jaundice or yellowing of the eyes and skin • Low fever • Prolonged penile erections that last up to 4 hours • Dark colored urine • Serious chest pain
Less serious side effects of using Uroxatral are:
• Headache • Exhaustion and fatigue • Mild dizziness • Sneezing • Stuffy nose • Sore throat

Drug Interactions with Uroxatral
Uroxatral can prove to be harmful if used in tandem with certain other drugs. Make sure to inform your doctor about the following drugs if you are to take Uroxatral:
• Arsenic trioxide • imanitib • isoniazid • enoxacin • droperidol • cimetidine • antidepressants such as clomipramine, nefazodone, amitriptylline or desipramine • diltiazem • conivaptan • antifungals such as voriconazole and clotrimazole • antibiotics • medication for heart or blood pressure • medication for irregular heart rhythm • medication for HIV or AIDS such as saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, fosamprenavir, delavirdine or atazanavir • nitrate heart medication • anti-malaria medication such as mefloquine and Chloroquine • various narcotic medication • medication for psychiatric disorders • medicine to treat vomiting and nausea • narcotic medication (e.g. Methadone)
