Veramyst Nasal
Veramyst Nasal Description
Veramyst Nasal is the brand name of a nasal spray that belongs to the group of medications known as corticosteroids. It is prescribed in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. Corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory properties and exhibit high efficacy in controlling allergic conditions. They work by controlling the hypersensitivity reaction of the body’s immune system to allergens. The active ingredient in Veramyst Nasal is fluticasone furoate. The molecule is present in the micronized form in the aqueous suspension of the medication. The suspension also contains dextrose anhydrous, 0.015% w/w benzalkonium chloride, microcrystalline cellulose, edetate disodium, polysorbate 80, carboxymethylcellulose sodium and sterile water as the inactive ingredients. Veramyst Nasal is supplied in a brown coloured glass bottle which is enclosed in device with a spray nozzle and release button. The bottle has an indicator window which allows you to view the contents inside. Each bottle of Veramyst Nasal spray contains 10gm (net weight) of the suspension and provides 120 measured sprays. After initiation, each spray from the nozzle delivers 50 microliters of suspension as a fine mist that contains 27.5 mcg of fluticasone furoate. Veramyst Nasal spray is presented by GlaxoSmithKline.
Conditions Treated by Veramyst Nasal
Veramyst Nasal is a very safe prescription drug that is used for the treatment of chronic and acute allergic rhinitis both in adults and paediatric patients. It is effective in treating nasal allergies like sneezing, stuffy or runny nose that affects patients either seasonally or throughout the year. Allergies happen when the body’s immune system overreacts to everyday substances like certain foods, pollens, pollutants, insect bites etc which are otherwise harmless to most people. Such an overreaction produces inflammations in different parts of the body and entails a complicated mechanism involving different chemicals and cells within the body
Veramyst Nasal Dosage Information
a.) Typical dosage recommendations
Typical dosage of any medication depends on several factors like age, physical condition, past and present medical history, any other ongoing treatment etc., and Veramyst Nasal is no exception. Generally, the initial normal dosage of Veramyst Nasal in adults and adolescent patients aged twelve years and above is 110mcg of the suspension once daily. This is to be administered through two sprays in each of your nostrils. As the symptoms of allergy subside, this dose can be reduced to 55mcg once daily i.e. one spray in each of the nostrils for effective maintenance. In case of paediatric patients aged between two to eleven years of age, the usual starting dose is 55 mcg per day to be administered as one spray per nostril. In case the patient is not responding, the dose can be increased to 110mcg daily i.e. two sprays. This is reduced once the patient starts responding and the symptoms have subsided.
b.) Missing a dose
In case you have forgotten a particular dose of Veramyst Nasal, use the medication whenever you remember. However, skip it altogether and move on to the next dose if the time interval between the two doses is very less. Never use more medicine in order to compensate for a missed dose.
c.) Overdosing
Veramyst Nasal is a safe medication and its overdosing is not expected to result in any fatal reactions or major side effects. However, long term usage of any steroid can lead to symptoms like acne, increased facial hair, menstrual disturbances, reduction in sexual urge etc.
Veramyst Nasal Warnings
Your physician should know everything about your medical history like recent nasal infections, nasal surgery; injury or ulcer, ocular problems like cataracts or glaucoma, hepatic impairments or about any other infectious disease before prescribing Veramyst Nasal. You should also tell him/her if you are allergic to fluticasone furoate (the prime ingredient in Veramyst Nasal) or to any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Avoid close contact with people suffering from any infectious disease especially measles or chicken pox while undergoing treatment with Veramyst Nasal. Since fluticasone furoate lowers your body’s immunity, you are more vulnerable to infections while using it and such infectious diseases can become fatal if contacted. Your doctor would also like to know if you are pregnant, plan to conceive or breastfeeding. Veramyst Nasal is a nasal spray and should not be used in any other way. Use the medicine exactly as directed by your physician. Do not alter dose or stop using the medication without medical advice. In case Veramyst Nasal enters your eyes or mouths, rinse off immediately with copious amount of water. Before using Veramyst Nasal for the first time, prime the bottle properly. Shake the suspension thoroughly and spray up to six times in the air away from your face. Shake the suspension before each use. If the spray has been lying idle for more than one month or if the bottle has been kept open for more than five days, prime the pump before using once again. Always discard the bottle after using 120 sprays even if it does not seem empty. Store the bottle vertically in a cool and dark place and always keep it capped. Keep away from children and pets and never refrigerate the medication. Always blow your nose before each application of Veramyst Nasal. Do not try to inhale deeply but breathe in gently while spraying the medication into your nasal cavity. Avoid spraying on the nasal septum (the bone that separates your two nostrils) as repeated spraying on this area may cause bleeding or infection in the bone.
