Xarelto

Xarelto Drug Description

The anticoagulant Xarelto is the brand name for the generic drug Rivaroxaban that is prescribed for preventing deep vein thrombosis. Deep venous thrombosis is a serious medical condition that leads to the formation of blood clots inside the blood vessels of a patient’s legs (usually due to inactivity after a major surgery that limits the patient’s mobility). If these blood clots travel all the way up to the lungs and lodge inside the blood vessels of your lungs, it can result in pulmonary embolism. Xarelto is a type of blood thinner prescribed to patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery and are therefore unable to walk for a long time. This is when these patients are most susceptible to pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis and are asked to take Xarelto for several days. This prescription drug Xarelto can prevent blood clots and strokes in patients suffering from non-valvular atrial fibrillation and other types of heart rhythm problems. The function of Xarelto or Rivaroxaban is to help prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots in your blood vessels and decrease your blood’s clotting ability. This anticoagulant also happens to be a factor Xa inhibitor.

Conditions Treated by Xarelto

Xarelto reduces the risks of blood clots and strokes in people who suffer from specific types of heart rhythm problems. It is also useful for preventing the formation of blood clots after a surgery. Rivaroxaban is actually a type of blood thinner.

Xarelto Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Patients who have undergone hip replacement surgery and are at risk for deep vein thrombosis should take 10 mg of Xarelto once every day for at least 35 days. They should be administered the first dose six to ten hours after surgery. For patients who have undergone knee replacement surgery, the normal recommended dosage is around 10 mg once daily for twelve days. Patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation should take 20 or 15 mg of Xarelto once each day after dinner. All the dosages described above are general recommendations for adult patients. In case of children, the dose and use should be determined by a physician. It is up to your physician to determine how much of Xarelto you should consume and how frequently. Patients who have undergone surgery can consume this drug without or with food. Atrial fibrillation patients are better off taking this drug with their dinner or supper.

b.) Missing a Dose

Try to take the medication at the same time each day. This way you won’t forget to take your medicine. But if you forget a dose, do not take extra doses to compensate for a missed dose. If necessary, throw out the missed dose and take your medicine following the regular dosing schedule. Or take it as soon as you remember.

c.) Overdosing

If you suspect an overdose, rush the patient to the nearest ER or call your local emergency number or poison control helpline. Or you may contact your physician who will advise you on the next course of action.

Xarelto Warnings

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Rivaroxaban or to any of the ingredients inside Xarelto. Contact your physician and tell him right away if you are pregnant or have conceived or are trying to conceive or are breastfeeding. This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients suffering from or with a history of liver diseases, kidney diseases, spinal, brain or eye surgery, stroke, stomach bleeding, intestinal ulcer, spinal catheter insertion, blood vessel problems and bleeding problems. If you have active, major bleeding, stay away from Xarelto. This medicine can cause gingivitis and easy dental/gum bleeding. Use a soft toothbrush and anti-gingivitis toothpaste and clean your teeth carefully. If you have to undergo any surgery or dental procedure or medical tests, you need to inform your physician beforehand who will ask you to discontinue the use of Xarelto several days prior to the procedure. Your bleeding problems may exacerbate after taking this medication and you are at higher risk if you have kidney problems or have received an epidural or if there is a catheter in your spinal column.
