Zaditen (Ketotifen)
Zaditen Description
Zaditen is the brand name for the generic drug Ketotifen which is a kind of asthma prophylactics and anti allergics. It is used for treating mild allergic asthma in kids in conjunction with other medications. Both the Zaditen tablet and the oral syrup contain an antihistamine known as Ketotifen hydrogen fumarate (active ingredient).
Conditions Treated by Zaditen
Zaditen or Ketotifen is used along with other anti allergy and anti asthma drugs for treating children suffering from mild allergic asthma. This anti allergy medication assists in the reduction of asthma syndromes by minimising your physical response to allergens that trigger acute asthma attacks. It is also used for treating allergic conditions like allergic conjunctivitis, hay fever or allergic rhinitis.
Zaditen Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Typical dosage recommendations for kids above three years of age are one mg two times each day, once in the evening and once in the morning. For infants and toddlers aged between six months and three years, the dosage is usually 0.05 mg for each kg of body weight. It has to be taken twice each day, in the evening and morning. Your physician may ask you to start off with a lower dose and then graduate to a higher recommended dose after approximately five days to minimise the side effects. Dosage recommendations vary from patient to patient. Let your doctor decide which dose is ideal for you. Do not try to alter your dosage by yourself. You are supposed to swallow Zaditen liquid or tablets, either without or with food. For measuring out an accurate dosage of Zaditen liquid, take the help of an oral syringe instead of using household teaspoons.
b.) Missing a Dose
If your child misses a dose, feed him or her the missed dose as soon as you can possibly remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, forget about the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Feed your child the next dose at the right time, but do not give him or her a double dose to catch up.
c.) Overdosing
Symptoms of Zaditen overdose include reversible coma, hypotension, tachycardia, disorientation, headache, nystagmus, drowsiness, confusion, convulsions and hyper excitability. Watch out for respiratory depression and bradycardia. If you suspect an overdose, rush the patient to the nearest ER or consult your physician immediately. General supportive treatment is more than sufficient. The drug overdose is eliminated with emesis or gastric lavage.
Zaditen Warnings
Do not take Zaditen if you are sensitive to benzoate compounds or allergic to Ketotifen or to any of the ingredients inside Zaditen. Women who are pregnant or are trying to conceive or suspect that they might be pregnant or are nursing should not take Zaditen. If your kid suffers from or has suffered from seizures in the past, Zaditen can maximise seizure risk. Anybody with a history of seizures should discuss this issue openly with their physician so that your doctor can adjust the dosing or monitor your progress in a special manner. You may be using other asthma prevention drugs such as fluticasone, budesonide, beclomethasone, corticosteroids of other kinds, sodium cromoglycate or salbutamol while taking Zaditen. Do not reduce the dosage of these other asthma prevention drugs immediately. Instead consult your physician and follow his instructions. Because this medication can cause drowsiness, you should not operate any heavy machinery or drive a vehicle or do anything that requires you to be highly alert. Monitor and chaperone your kids when they are under the influence of this medication. Because of the presence of 4 gm of carbohydrates in every 5 ml of Zaditen syrup, diabetic patients should consult their physician before taking this medication. In rare instances, some patients report decreased blood cell counts while taking Zaditen and antidiabetes drugs simultaneously. Your physician should address your concerns regarding this. Share your medical history and medical conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes, post partum breast feeding, asthma or susceptibility to seizures with your healthcare provider.
