Actonel (risedronate)
Actonel Description
Actonel is a medication used to keep osteoporosis at bay in both women and men. Astonel is contained in a group of medicines called biphosphonates, and basically helps in the delay of bone loss and accelerates the increase in bone mass too. As an obvious result, this thwarts bone fractures to a large extent, the frequent occurrence of which is a growing concern. a) Typical Dosage Recommendation
The dosage administration varies according to your condition. It is advised not to alter the dosage quantity or timing without your doctor’s recommendation. Take Actonel with a glass of water, either 30 minutes before a meal, or at least two hours after a meal. While taking this medication you must be able to stand or sit upright for minimum of 30 minutes after taking it. Once a week is the most common prescribed administration and usually practiced Actonel now also comes in once a month dosing, so ensure you take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
b) Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Actonel, take as soon as you remember and then continue with your regular schedule. Do not take an extra dose.
c) Over Dosing
Over dosage of Actonel can cause heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, and lowers the levels of calcium and phosphate in blood.
Actonel Warnings
After taking Actonel it is important to wait at least 30 minutes before lying down. You may stand, sit, walk or engage in any other normal activities but is it recommended that you avoid lying down or resting. Take Actonel 30 minutes before breakfast and it’s ideal if you can take it first thing in the morning when you wake up. If this is not possible, please consult your doctor for suggestions on a treatment regime schedule that works for your lifestyle. Do not take any other tablet or other kinds of medication at the same time as Actonel. Even over the counter medications, vitamins, calcium tablets or other prescription pills. Take it along with water, and not with any other drink. Make sure to take it with a full glass of water, which is around 8 fluid ounces. Remember, Actonel is only a small part of your treatment, and that you must also follow a proper diet and exercise.
If you have discussed your case well with your doctor, he probably has told you that you must not take Actonel if you are Allergic to any of the ingredients contained in this medication. You should also not take Actonel if you suffer from hypocalcaemia, which is low blood calcium. Or if your esophagus has trouble transporting food to your stomach and your kidney functions poorly. If there is a diagnosed ulcer in your stomach or you suffer from a deficiency of Vitamin D then it is advised that you should probably not take this drug.
Actonel Side-effects
Actonel can stimulate adverse reactions, if you are particularly allergic to the ingredients, like rizedronata. The allergic reactions may include swelling of face, lips and tongue, inhalation trouble, and hives. Less serious Actonel side effects may include:
- mild stomach pain
- upset stomach
- diarrhea
- constipation
- mild joint pain
- back pain
- headache
If they aggravate, you could experience more severe side effects. Stop using Actonel and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
- chest pain
- difficulty or pain when swallowing
- pain or burning under the ribs or in the back
- new or worsening heartburn
- severe joint, bone, or muscle pain
- jaw pain, numbness, or swelling
If at any point you experience any of these side effect while taking Actonel, you should consult your doctor or visit the emergency room immediately. People with a medical history of cancer, are likely to experience stronger side-effect symptoms than those stated above. If you have undergone chemotherapy, radiation, or have taken steroids, you are more likely to develop osteonecrosis of the jaw, which can cause blood clotting disorders, numbness of bones, swelling, gum infections.
If you become pregnant you will need to contact your doctor immediately. While it is not currently known if Actonel is found in breast milk it is recommended that with the potential for serious adverse reaction in nursing infant that you should stop nursing or discontinue use of the drug. You will want to discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of continuing Actonel treatment while you are pregnant.
