Celebrex (celecoxib)

Celebrex Description

Celebrex is an oral consumption drug that contains the active ingredient Celecoxib. Other key ingredients in Celebrex are lactose monohydrate, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, povidone, gelatin and edible inks. It is mainly prescribed for patients suffering from Arthritis. It has been available in the market since December 1998. The company that produces Celebrex is Pfizer and it is also marketed under the brand name Celebra and Onsenal. All these are in the form or oral consumption pills. Pfizer holds the patent for the drug hence there is no generic drugs’ market for Celebrex in the USA. However in countries such as India and the Philippines where there are no patency rights with Pfizer, Celebrex is available under the names of Celcoxx and Cobix as a generic drug.

Conditions Treated by Celebrex

Celebrex belongs to a class of drugs called NSAIDS or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. As the name suggests, these are used to tackle with pain or inflammation (swelling) from certain conditions such as arthritis, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and even menstrual pain. Celebrex has a hormonal reaction which thereby reduces the inflammation and pain. It is also beneficial in treating hereditary polyps in the colon. It is given to patients who suffer from both Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis, with variable doses. Celebrex is also effective in pain and symptomatic relief in case of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, meaning it is given to children as well. Originally Celebrex was aimed as a specific pain relief that didn’t have adverse gastrointestinal effects as seen in the typical NSAIDS then. Today it is regularly used for long-term pain relief management for the above mentioned conditions.

Celebrex Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

Celebrex is a meant for oral consumption and is therefore available in the form of capsules. There are different concentrations of Celecobix in different capsules such as 50mg, 100mg, 200mg with 400mg being the highest potency. As a rule, the lowest possible dose that is found to be most effective for a patient is recommended. Usually an adult dose is of 100mg to 200mg daily is considered average dose. The dosage is calculated by the physician based on a number of factors. The information on these factors is taken at the time of medical history examination.

b.) Missing A Dose

Celebrex is used for chronic pain management in several conditions. It is also sometimes given to children. However this is not a self-administered drug so the dose should be adhered to. It is also ideally recommended that the schedule for taking the daily medicine be fixed to avoid missing the dose. However if a dose is missed, then the patient must simply move on to the next dose rather than increasing the number of tablets of Celebrex consumed, as this can cause overdosing.

c.) Overdosing

The dosage for any prescription medicine is a carefully calculated one. Hence overdosing can cause problems due to the high concentration of the medicine consumed without any time gap. There are some indications of Celebrex overdose, which are as follows:

There are also some serious symptoms of an overdose of Celebrex such as gastrointestinal bleeding, kidney failure and coma. If there is a suspected overdose, the patient must immediately receive medical care. For a recent overdose, the doctor might induce vomiting in the patient to get rid of the excess medicine. In addition to this a close monitoring of the blood pressure, heartbeats and breathing needs to done. Hence immediate medical help in case of an overdose is a must.

Celebrex Warnings

Celebrex is a medicine that belongs to NSAIDS which carry some amount of risk of heart related problems in the long run. The risk could be of heart disease, stroke or blood circulation problems in general. This risk may increase with time depending on the dosage of Celebrex consumed. Therefore those patients who already have a history of heart disease are not recommended a dose of Celebrex. In addition to this, Celebrex may also affect the functioning of the digestive system, more specifically the stomach or the intestines. Unfortunately these effects may not always occur with obvious symptoms but can prove quite risky. The risk is greater in case of older patients. As a rule, those patients who are taking Celebrex must not consume alcohol as it adversely affect the stomach. Also it is better to seek medical advice before taking any other over the counter medicines while taking Celebrex. This is particularly true for any minor pain relief drugs that are sold at the pharmacist’s without prescription. Since Celebrex is also for pain relief, the two may combine to create an overdose, resulting in adverse response by the body.

Most of the prescription drugs including Celebrex have some side effect or the other. So patients need not worry about side effects if they are fairly manageable and for a short time. Most of the times, side effects can be managed with some home remedies or they simply go away as the body gets used to the medicine. The minor side effects of Celebrex include the following:

Most of the above are minor ones and can be managed by the patient. For instance for acidity, it is better to have some cool milk or to have regular meals when taking Celebrex. But if the symptoms persist or if any of the following are observed then contact a doctor.
