Aromasin (exemestane)
Aromasin Description
Aromasin is a drug that contains the active ingredient exemestane. Which is an oral treatment used to lower the levels of estrogen among postmenopausal women. Thereby helping with the treatment of certain types of breast cancer and preventing the growth of tumors in the breast.
Exemestane contained within aromasin, is a steroidal aromatase inactivator, similar in structure to androstenedione (a natural substrate). Thus, exemestane, being similar in structure to the target of the enzymes, binds to them in a stable manner and thus prevents them from converting the androgens into estrogens, thereby lowering estrogen levels.
Conditions Treated by Aromasin
Aromasin is used primarily for the treatment of hormonally responsive breast cancer and in reducing the occurrence of breast tumors. It is quite often prescribed to women who have had breast cancer progress even after receiving treatment with other medications, such as Soltamox (tamoxifen) or Nolvadex (tamoxifen). Aromasin can also be prescribed to treat other medical conditions not listed here.
