Evista Description

Raloxifene HCl is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that is marketed as an oral medication under the brand name of Evista. An off-white powdery chemical substance, it is partially soluble in water. Evista is marketed in blister cards with 15 tablets in each card. Each tablet contains 60mg of Raloxifene HCl. Evista tablets should be stored at room temperature in a dry place away from direct sunlight. This drug is commonly used to treat bone conditions in postmenopausal women.

Conditions Treated by Evista

The estrogenic property of Evista affects the formation and breakdown of bones and helps in reducing the loss of bone tissues. This makes it an effective drug in treating osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. On the other hand the anti-estrogenic properties of this drug have a pronounced effect in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women suffering from osteoporosis. It also helps to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are at a high risk of invasive breast cancer. Evista however is not known to have any effect on any other types of cancer. It cannot be used to treat or prevent the recurrence if you have already suffered from breast cancer.

Evista Dosage Information

a.) Typical Recommended Dosage

Each of the 15 tablets of Evista in a blister card is marked with a day of the week. Therefore, your first tablet should be the one marked with the day on which you start the medication. Thereafter the drug should be taken once in a day and care should be taken that you maintain a regular routine and take it at the same time everyday. When you start with a new blister strip make sure that the day labeled on the tablet matches the actual day you are taking it. This drug can be taken with or without food. Evista is specifically made to treat postmenopausal women only and should not be taken by anyone else.

b.) Missing A Dose

If you miss a dose then you should take a tablet as soon as you can. But if you remember about it only on the next day and at a time that is very close to that of your next dose, don’t try to make up the missed dose. The gap between two doses should not be less than the prescribed gap.
