Frova Description

Frova is an oral medication primarily consisting of frovatriptan succinate. Frovatriptan Succinate is a hydroxy tryptamine receptor. It is a white – off white powder that is soluble in water and other liquids. The tablet is round and white-off white in colour. Each tablet normally contains about 3 mg of frovatriptan succinate. The tablets also contain other inactive ingredients like lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, triacetin USP, titanium dioxide.

Conditions Treated by Frova

Frova is an oral medicine prescribed to treat patients suffering from migraine headaches with or without aura. The tablet is only prescribed to adults. The medicine works by reducing the pain caused due to migraine attacks. It can even help stop future attacks. With regular use, the medicine can help reduce the symptoms of migraine. Frova is not used to treat hemiplegic or basilar migraine. The medicine may not be effective in the treatment of cluster headache.

a.) Typical dosage recommendations

The normal recommended dosage of Frova is a single tablet – to be taken once during an attack. It is safer to have the tablets with fluids. In cases where the headache still persists or recurs after sometime, another tablet may be administered. However, it is necessary to avoid having 3 tablets or more on a single day. After 2 doses, if the migraine pain still persists, medical attention may be required.

b. Missing a dose

Frova is not generally prescribed as a daily use drug. However, during a migraine attack, if you forget to have a second dose, it may result in increased migrant pain and eventually dizziness and confusion. Changes in vision are also associated with missed migraine medication. Severe migraine may also eventually be fatal. During an attack, it is important to follow your doctor’s advice and have the recommended dosage accordingly. Severe migraine attacks if not treated in time may result in coma eventually.

c. Overdosing

It is not recommended to consume more than three tablets within 24 hours. If you have more than three tablets, you must seek immediate medical attention. Complications like drowsiness, increased confusion, blurred vision, weakness, nausea, vomiting, fainting spells, fluctuating blood pressure and fluctuating heart rates may turn out to be fatal if not treated in time. Overdose of Frova may also lead to severe body ache is some patients.

Frovo Warnings

Frova should not be treated as an over the counter medicine. It is a prescription drug only that is to be used under a doctor’s guidance and observation. If a patient is administered two tablets on a single day, there should be a gap of at least two hours between the two doses. Patients should never have three or more doses on a single day. This may lead to an overdose and cause further complications. Frova should only be administered in the event of a migraine attack and never for other health problems. Normal headaches caused due to stress, lack of food intake, etc should not be treated with Frova. It is safer to prescribe lower doses of other medications to elderly patients. Some ingredients in Frova may have a negative impact on the body. It is important to get an allergy test done before prescribing the medication. When patients are known to suffer from regular migraine attacks, an allergy test should be carried out immediately. It is recommended that the first two doses of Frova are taken under strict observation. Children should be administered lower doses of other migraine or headache medication. Frova is not meant to be administered to children. Patients who constantly use Frova to treat migraines should undergo periodic cardiovascular evaluations. If Frova is not administered with care, it may result in severe cardiac problems. Cerebral hemorrhage has been reported in patients frequently using Frova.

Frova Side Effects

Frequent use of migraine tablets may lead to side effects. Sometimes, side effects may cause major health complications. However, with immediate medical attention, most side effects can be treated effectively. Frova may cause dizziness, paresthesia, dry mouth, minor dehydration, fatigue, flashes, changes in body temperature, hot or cold sensations and body pain or chest pain. Frova is known to cause dehydration in most patients; this is why it should be taken with fluids, preferably water. Less common side effects observed due to Frova are: Central and Nervous system problems like dysesthesia, infrequent tremours, hyperesthesia, involuntary muscle movements or contractions, vertigo, difficulty in walking or speaking, hypertonia, sudden reflexes, tongue paralysis. Gastrointestinal problems like vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, gas, constipation, appetite changes, frequent change in bowel habits, stomach ulcers, stomatitis etc. Psychological problems like: insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, confusion, agitation, mood swings, difficulty in concentration, depression, amnesia, personality disorder. Frequent body pain, back pain, leg pain, muscle weakness, sudden fever, hot flushes. Some patients may experience respiratory problems like sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis, hyperventilation and laryngitis. Changes in vision, blurred vision, eye pain, conjunctivitis are also common side effects of Frova. Patients may also experience skin problems like rashes, hives, increased sweating, bullous eruptions etc. Hearing problems are also observed in few patients. Symptoms like tinnitus, ear ache, bradycardia, tachycardia etc are also common. It is also normal to experience metabolic or nutritional disorders, thirst and dehydration, hypoglycaemia, urinary disorders, abnormal urine, renal pain, cardiovascular disorders, abnormal ECG, bleeding and clotting disorders etc. Some patients may even experience seizures. Seizures are usually a cause for concern and the patient should be hospitalized immediately. The side effects listed above may not include rare symptoms observed in certain patients. In some cases, individual patients may suffer from rare side effects that are not observed in other patients.

Frova Drug Interactions

Frova may interact with ergo containing drugs, other SHTis, M agonists, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and triptans. In order to avoid or limit drug interactions, Frova should not be used within 24 hours of the above mentioned drugs.
