Yasmin (drospirenone,ethinyl estradiol)
Yasmin Description
The effects of Yasmin tablets comply with the drug combination of ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. This drug combination is used for hormonal contraception in the form of birth control pills. In addition, it can also be used in case of menstrual disorders, such as frequent bleeding (dysmenorrhea). Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone belong to the group of estrogen-progestin combination for contraception. Ethinyl estradiol is related to the endogenous hormone estradiol from the group of estrogens. Drospirenone is a progestin similar to progesterone.
The main active ingredients in Yasmin are drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. In addition, the following non-active ingredients in Yasmin tablets are hypromellose, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, lactose monohydrate, macrogol, cornstarch (preglatinized starch), magnesium (stearate, palmitate, oleate) and povidone.
Conditions Treated by Yasmin
The combination of estrogens and progestins helps to prepare the body in avoiding pregnancy, ovulation and the regression phase in the menstrual cycle. This is established when these hormones are released at certain days of the cycle differently. The use of the drug combination in the body increases amounts of estrogens and progestins. As a result, ovulation is inhibited and there is no implantation of the egg. This means Yasmin develops a double protection against pregnancy. Drospirenone also thickens the mucus at uterus entrance so that sperm cannot penetrate. Through its positive influence on the development of the endometrium, drospirenone can also control menstrual disorders, irregular bleeding by bridging the uterine lining.
Yasmin Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Terminate the medication before a pregnancy. During pregnancy the drug should absolutely be discontinued. Check-ups should take place under your doctor’s supervision about every six months.
The tablet should be swallowed whole with some liquid. Take one every day for 21 consecutive days in such an order that the next intake is possible at the same time of the next day. The time gap between two intakes should strictly be 24 hours.
Milk production can also be reduced by the application of the drug. In addition, small amounts of active ingredient in breast milk can pass into the baby. To avoid any harm to the weaned child Yasmin should necessarily be avoided in case of lactating mothers. The combination of ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone is not well suited to children as well. They should, in no way, ingest the drug.
b.) Missing A Dose
A missed dose of the combination may reduce the effectiveness. A forgotten dose must be rescheduled no later than within 12 hours. Otherwise, the contraceptive effect of the subsequent administration may not reliable in the current cycle. In such a case, skip the missed tablet and make sure mechanical contraceptives (such as condoms) are applied during coitus.
c.) Overdosing
If there is vomiting or diarrhea after a dosage, the medicine may not be completely absorbed into the body because of an overdose. Call and consult your regular physician straight away in such a case.
Yasmin Side Effects
Common Menstrual disorders (such as amenorrhea), irregular bleeding, breast pain, headaches, depression, migraine, nausea and vomiting, vaginal discharge, and fungal infections of the vagina are the common side effects of Yasmin administration. Uncommon
Changes in libido, high blood pressure, lower blood pressure, acne, hypersensitivity reactions (skin rash, itching, fluid retention), severe vaginal infections, weight changes have also been reported by patients using the drug, although such cases are not very frequent. Rare Fluid secretion from the mammary gland, asthma, deafness, and vascular occlusion (thrombosis) are the very rare side effects of Yasmin. Herpes infections from a previous pregnancy (herpes gestationis), untreated growths of the uterine lining, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe liver diseases (such as liver tumors, liver inflammation, jaundice, biliary stasis, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Rotor syndrome and porphyria), acute vascular occlusion (thrombosis) of arteries and veins, venous thrombosis, phlebitis, diabetes mellitus, severe metabolic disorders or obesity, middle ear hearing loss (which could get worse if there were previous pregnancies), severe migraine, lupus erythematosus, blood clotting disorders, pulmonary embolism, stroke, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction have been found in rare patients.
Yasmin Warnings
The intake of ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone has to be stopped immediately when hypersensitivity to the active ingredients of the combination are detected in a patient. Existing or previously malignant tumors would continue to grow under the administration of estradiol. So its usage is absolutely discouraged in breast cancer patients.
To avoid serious disorders under the administration of Yasmin, the physician must verify the development of treatment and therapy to cancel where appropriate through monitoring of the patient’s results. He should see to it that the patient hasn’t previously encountered phlebitis or any disorders in the varicose veins. Blood pressure rise, heart and kidney dysfunction, liver and gall bladder disease, epileptic conditions, asthma, chorea, multiple sclerosis, endometriosis, lipid disorders, severe obesity and diseases of the breast (mastopathy) should also be taken into account before administering Yasmin dosages.
The taking of the drug combination promotes the development of vascular occlusion (thrombosis) that can lead to dangerous cardiovascular disease. This risk can be further increased by additional risk factors as smoking, high blood pressure, blood clotting disorders or lipid metabolism, previous occlusions and longer immobilization (such as being bedridden).
Ethinyl estradiol increases the concentration of thyroid hormones. This must be taken into account in studies of the thyroid. In patients with chronic heart disease or kidney disease, mineral levels in the blood should regularly be determined. Smoking increases the risk for serious side effects of the combination. By using Yasmin, the risk of thrombosis and multiple sclerosis may be increased in some patients. The use of this drug does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.
Possible Drug Interactions With Yasmin
The contraceptive effect of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol in Yasmin can be attenuated by the simultaneous intake of drugs that speed up the degradation of the induced hormones. As a result, it can cause increased rates of bleeding between periods and single pregnancies. Among those substances:
- sleeping pills from the group of barbiturates
- Antibiotics such as the following:
- virus-inhibiting agents such as:
- anticonvulsants such as:
- barbexaclon
- hydantoin
- carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- phenytoin (Dilantin)
- primidone (Mysoline)
- oxcarbazepine (Trileptal)
- topiramate (Topamax)
- felbamate
- Gout medication such as:
These medications should be avoided to prevent any adverse drug interaction with Yasmin ingredients. Since the patient’s blood sugar levels can be affected by an interaction of insulin with ethinyl estradiol, oral hypoglycemic agents may also require dose adjustment.
