Altace (ramipril)
Altace Description
Altace is a drug that is used to treat patients with symptoms of high blood pressure or hypertension and heart failure. Altace is also prescribed to patients who have recently suffered a cardiac arrest. The active ingredient of Altace is called ramipril. Ramipril belongs to a particular group of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ACE is responsible for producing chemicals that cause the muscles of the arteries of the heart to contract. This results in high blood pressure as the arteries of the heart have become narrow. Altace and other ACE inhibitors work on the arteries by reducing the production of angiotensin converting enzyme. This in turn helps the arteries to become dilated and thus lowers the blood pressure as the heart does not have to work too hard on pumping blood. Altace also helps to increase the blood flow and oxygen to the heart.
Altace is quite effective for people who have a failing heart. The drug works in the same manner when it is used to enlarge the arteries which go to the kidneys. The ACE inhibitor dilate the arteries of the kidney and this helps to prevent kidney failure. Altace is available in the form of a capsule and the medicine should be swallowed with sufficient amount of water.
