Glumetza Drug Description

Glumetza or metformin is an oral medication used for treating diabetes type two and belongs to a class of drugs known as biguanides. Glumetza reduces the glucose amount that is absorbed from food and it also decreases the glucose amount manufactured by the liver. It also maximises your bodily response to insulin but is not meant for treating diabetes type one.

Glumetza is an oral medication that assists in the controlling of blood sugar levels in the body and is used for treating diabetes Mellitus or type 2 diabetes. b.) Missing A Dose

c.) Overdosing

Glumetza Warnings

If you know you are allergic to metformin, stay away from Glumetza. Glumetza is off limits for you if you are suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis. Stop taking Glumetza temporarily if you undergo CT scan or X Ray where the technician injects a dye in your veins. If you have a history of heart ailments or liver problems/diseases, inform your physician who will decide if metformin is right for you. There are a few patients who can contract lactic acidosis as a result of taking Glumetza. It can turn fatal. This life threatening condition can develop if you drink lots of alcohol, if you drink little water and are dehydrated or are suffering from a severe infection, congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease. This is also a pregnancy category B drug. If you are planning to conceive or have already conceived or are breast feeding, you should consult your doctor before taking Glumetza. It is best to avoid Glumetza if you are a nursing mother. If you are forced to take metformin while nursing, stop breast feeding as it may harm your baby (though it has not been established or proven by medical studies). If a kid is younger than 17 years of age, he or she should not be prescribed with extended release Glumetza. Glumetza is not intended for use by kids under 10 years of age.

Glumetza Side Effects

Common side effects of Glumetza are metallic after taste in your mouth, weakness, diarrhoea, upset stomach, vomiting and nausea. The stomach symptoms of oral Glumetza are syndromes of lactic acidosis. Do not be alarmed if you find empty tablet shells in your stool because this is normal and totally harmless. Glumetza may cause a drop in blood sugar levels – hypoglycaemia – if used in conjunction with anti diabetic drugs. Symptoms of hypoglycaemia include tingling feet, tingling hands, dizziness, blurred vision, hunger, rapid heartbeat, trembling and sudden sweating. You may need to carry glucose gel or tablets at all times to combat situations like these. If you experience the symptoms of lactic acidosis which can turn deadly, discontinue taking Glumetza immediately and contact your physician. You should seek emergency medical intervention right away if you notice even the milder lactic acidosis symptoms – uneven or sluggish heart beat, abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting and nausea, feelings of weakness, fatigue, light headedness, dizziness, trouble in breathing, muscle weakness or pain and numbness in your limbs or limbs becoming cold. Patients rarely ever experience severe allergic reactions after taking Glumetza. However, if you experience difficulty in breathing, severe dizziness, swelling or itching of the throat, tongue or face or rashes, you should seek immediate medical intervention. If any of your other symptoms which may or may not be listed here causes you trouble or becomes bothersome, get medical assistance. Some of the less serious Glumetza side effects include stomach pain, gas, diarrhoea, vomiting, mild nausea, weakness, muscle pain and headache. Flu symptoms, body aches, chills, fever, rapid weight gain, swelling and shortness of breath caused by mild exertion are classified as serious side effects.
