Hyzaar DS (losartan/hydrochlorothiazide)
Hyzaar DS Description
Hyzaar DS is a combination drug and contains losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide. It is marketed by Merck & Co.
It is used as a combination therapy for the treatment of hypertension. It is administered only if you are using losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide individually and their doses have been stabilized. In case you suffer from certain heart diseases, then it can also help in reducing the possibility of a stroke.

It is a combination drug. Hydrochlorothiazide acts by affecting certain mechanisms in the kidneys. This leads to a decreased reabsorption of sodium ions by the kidneys. This in turn affects the retention of water by the kidneys. Hence, the volume of blood reduces. This leads to a decreased load on the heart.
It can thus be used for the treatment of Hypertension. It is usually used in combination with other drugs. In this case, it is losartan potassium.
Hyzaar DS Dosage Information
Hyzaar DS is sold in the market in the tablet form. It is available in a 100mg /25mg dosage. The 100mg is losartan potassium and 25mg is hydrochlorothiazide. The dosage varies from person to person and it must be titrated for each individual. Only when the medication is well tolerated should the dosage be increased.
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Hyzaar tablets may be started only after the patient has been stabilized on the individual components. Once this is done, the patient is started with an initial dose of 50mg / 12.5mg or 100mg / 25mg. If the patient fails to respond to the higher dose, to, then you can start the double strength medications, i.e. Hyzaar DS 100mg /25mg once a day.
a.) Missing a Dose
If you miss a dose, then you should take the medication immediately on remembering. However, if it is time for your next dose, then you may skip the dose and resume your schedule as normal. DO not overdose to make up for a missed dose.
c.) Overdosing
There is not much data available on the side effects of overdosage of Hyzaar DS. However, if you overdose, then the symptoms should be related to overdosage of losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide individually. The common symptoms of overdosage of losartan potassium include hypotension and increase in the heart rate. Hydrochlorothiazide overdosage may cause depletion of electrolytes in the body. This causes reduced sodium, chloride ions in the body. In addition, dehydration may result from excessive urine production.

Hyzaar DS Warnings
Hyzaar DS is to be strictly avoided during pregnancy. It is an Angiotensin receptor antagonist and can affect the fetus and even cause its death. As soon as a patient gets pregnant, Hyzaar should be discontinued.
The hydrochlorothiazide component of Hyzaar renders it incompatible for people who hane a hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-related drugs.
