Ventolin HFA (salbutamol)

Ventolin HFA Description

Ventolin HFA is a medicinal drug that belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators. It contains the chemical albuterol which is a short acting Beta 2 adrenergic receptor antagonist used to treat bronchospasms in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Ventolin HFA helps relax the muscles in the airways and increases flow of air to the lungs. As already mentioned, Ventolin HFA helps treat bronchospasms, particularly in people suffering from reversible obstructive airway disease as well as exercise induced bronchospasm.

Conditions Treated by Ventolin HFA

Ventolin HFA is used in the treatment of bronchospasms. Albuterol, the chemical present in Ventolin, relaxes the airway muscles, allowing more air to flow into the lungs. Thus Ventolin HFA is used in treating acute asthma, certain congenital myasthenic syndromes and in providing protection against exercise induced asthma and relief during therapy of asthma and other reversible or irreversible airways obstruction (such as bronchitis).

Ventolin HFA Dosage Information

a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations

It is extremely important that you take Ventolin HFA exactly as your doctor prescribes. Be very careful not to take bigger or smaller amounts or administer the drug for a longer time than recommended and follow the directions given on the prescription label.

Usually, Ventolin HFA is taken in the form of a nebulizer or inhaler device. When you are using the device for the first time, spray around 4 test sprays into the air, keeping the device away from yourself. This is known as priming. Priming is also needed if you have not used the device for over 2 weeks, or if you have accidentally dropped the inhaler.

Keep in mind that you should use only that inhaler which comes with your prescribed medicine. Using alternate devices may not provide the exact dosage that you need. Follow these steps in order to use the inhaler:

Shake the device well before spraying • Remove the inhaler’s mouthpiece. Exhale fully and place the mouthpiece inside your mouth. Inhale slowly while pushing down on the inhaler. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds and then slowly exhale. • If you perform more than 1 inhalation at a time, wait for about 1 minute before administering the second inhalation

In order to use a nebulizer:

Measure the exact medicine amount by using the provided dropper and put the requisite amount of liquid into the nebulizer’s medication chamber • Attach the mouthpiece to the chamber and then attach it to the compressor. Sit up straight and put the mouthpiece inside your mouth. Breathe evenly and slowly till all of the medicine has been inhaled (which should take around 5 to 15 minutes).

Take very close care while storing the medication. Make sure to always keep the device at room temperature and away from any heat and moisture. Extreme heat may cause the medicine canister of the inhaler to burst.

b.) Missing a Dose

If you end up missing a dose, take the missed dose the moment you remember. If however you remember when it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not however take any extra medication to make up for this missed dose.

c.) Overdosing

If you overdose on Ventolin HFA, seek medical attention right away.
