Advair HFA (Fluticasone Propionate/Salmeterol)
Advair HFA Description
Advair HFA is a combination of a long acting corticosteroid and a bronchodilator. This helps widen lungs and reduce inflammation thereby helping you breathe more easily. Advair is not recommended for providing relief from acute bronchospasm. Adavir HFA is usually recommended for patients who are not sufficiently controlled by a long term asthma control therapy like an inhaled corticosteroid and those who are in imperative need of both an inhaled corticosteroid and a long acting beta adrenergic antagonist (LABA) like salmeterol.
Advair HFA is available today in 3 strengths: 230mcg/21mcg inhaler, 115mcg/21mcg inhaler and 45mcg/21mcg inhaler that contain 230, 115 and 45 mcg of the active ingredients fluticasone propionate as well as salmeterol (21 mcg) in every inhalation. Make sure you store the inhaler at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. Ensure that you keep Advair HFA inhaler away from any source of high heat like in a car on an exceptionally hot day or near an open flame. When the canister gets too hot, there is a possibility for it to explode.
Conditions treated by Advair HFA Inhaler
Advair HFA treats two major causes of symptoms of asthma: inflammation and airway constriction. This medication is not recommended to treat severe and sudden symptoms of asthma since it cannot replace the role of a rescue inhaler. Two major components of Advair HFA inhaler are fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is a steroid preventing the release of those substances in your body causing inflammation. Salmeterol, on the other hand, is a bronchodilator that operates by relaxing muscles of the airways for improving breathing.
The two components together help to prevent asthma attacks. The inhaler can also be used to prevent worsening or flare up of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD as well as emphysema. The inhaler is only recommended for patients above 12 years of age who are experiencing these symptoms.
Advair HFA Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Advair HFA should only be orally administered in patients who are at least 12 years or older. The efficacy of the inhaler in patients below 12 years of age has not been determined. Advair HFA is recommended for 2 inhalations to be inhaled twice daily on an everyday basis. Large number of inhalations or more frequent administrations should not be done since overdosing symptoms are quite adverse and can react differently in different people. But when problems or symptoms occur between doses, a short acting beta agonist should be inhaled for providing relief.
The recommended beginning dose for Advair HFA is dependent on the patient’s current asthma condition and his response to therapy. The maximum dose is however, only 2 inhalations twice every day.
b.) Missing a Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember but if it is time for your subsequent dose; do not take the missed one. Do not take extra doses to catch up since it may prove harmful.
c.) Overdosing
Get emergency medical attention or call the Poison Helpline if you think you have taken a stronger dosage. Some of the overdosing symptoms to this drug include vomiting and nausea, headache, weakness, tremor, seizures, irregular or fast heartbeats and, chest pain or angina.
Advair HFA Warnings
It is extremely important for you to follow only the prescribed dose and to stick to the recommended period of time. You should not use Serevent (a second form of salmeterol) or a formoterol that is a similar inhaled bronchodilator unless your health care professional has prescribed you to. Salmeterol and fluticasone can bring down those blood cells that fight bodily infections. You have to stay away from individuals who have infections or are sick. You need to get preventive treatment if you are exposed to measles or chicken pox. Such conditions can prove fatal or serious with those using steroid medications. Salmeterol can increase risks associated with asthma related deaths especially if you are using it for an extended period of time. For an already established asthma attack, this bronchodilator will not work.
If you have a drug or food allergy, heart disease, seizure disorder, infection, diabetes, weak immune system, glaucoma, tuberculosis, thyroid disorder or osteoporosis, you should inform your doctor If you are already using a steroid drug, do not discontinue its usage abruptly. Stopping such drugs all of a sudden can create unpleasant side effects. Make sure you shake the inhaler for at least 5 seconds before every spray. Keep track of the number of times you use the spray and throw away the canister at the end of 120 sprays even if you feel there is some more medicine left in it.
