Sporanox (itraconazole)
Sporanox Description
Itraconazole is marketed by Janssen Pharmaceutica as Sporanox. Invented in 1984 and approved in 1997, this triazole antifungal drug is prescribed to those patients who have fungal infections. Sporanox can be administered intravenously or orally. The activity or performance of itraconazle has a broad spectrum when compared to fluconazole and hence treats many kinds of fungal infections. Sporanox functions by killing sensitive fungi by way of interfering with the development of fungal cell membrane.
Itraconazole or Sporanox capsules are available comprising of 100 mg of itraconazole. The bottle has a pink transparent body and blue opaque cap. These capsules come in unit dose blister packaging of 3 strips of 10 capsules each. The capsules should be kept at controlled room temperature of 15 degree to 25 degree Celsius. It should be kept away from moisture and light.
Conditions treated by Sporanox
Sporanox capsules are meant for treating certain fungal infections in non – immunocompromised or immunocompromised patients such as extrapulmonary and pulmonary, blastomycosis, non – meningeal histoplasmosis, histoplasmosis which includes chronic cavitary pulmonary disease (disseminated as well), aspergillosis, extrapulmonary and pulmonary in individuals who are not tolerant of or those who are do not comply with amphotericin B therapy.
Sporanox capsules are also meant for treating fungal infections such as onychomycosis of toenail (without or with fingernail involvement) because of dermatophytes and onychomycosis of fingernail because of dermatophytes. To confirm diagnosis of onychomycosis, nail specimens are taken for the purpose of laboratory testing and subsequently treatment initiated. These kinds of fungal infections can invade any part of your body that includes fingernails, toenails, throat, mouth or lungs. Sporanox oral solution is used for treating thrush that affects almost 50 percent of all HIV positive patients and at least up to 95 percent of AIDS patients. Esophageal and oral candidiasis results in painful sores or patches in the esophagus or mouth and makes the process of taking medicines or eating a painful activity.
Sporanox Dosage Information
a.) Typical Dosage Recommendations
Sporanox capsules should be taken with your complete meal in order to facilitate maximum absorption. Sporanox oral medication and Sporanox capsules are two different kinds of drugs and must not be taken interchangeably. For treating Histoplasmosis and Blastomycosis, the recommended dosage of Sporanox capsules is two capsules or 200 mg taken once every day. When no improvement is noticed or where there is occurrence of progressive fungal problem, the dosage can be increased in 100 mg increments to reach a maximum of 400 mg each day. In such cases, two divided doses of 200 mg should be administered.
For treating Aspergillosis, the recommended daily dose is 200 to 400 mg. For treating life-threatening situations, Sporanox can be administered orally or intravenously. Oral solution is found to be efficient for esophageal or oral candidiasis. The efficacy of Sporanox capsules in treating this disorder is not established. For treating Onychomyosis, the usual dose is 200 mg once every day for twelve subsequent weeks.
b.) Missing A Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember that you have missed it but if it is time for your subsequent dose; do not take the missed one. Do not take extra doses to catch up. It may prove harmful.
c.) Overdosing
If you feel you have been overdosed with Sporanox, contact Poison Helpline or get emergency medical attention. Symptoms of overdosing with this drug are not known.
Sporanox Warnings
Sporanox capsules cannot be used instead of Sporanox oral medication. Make sure you buy the right kind of medication from your pharmacist. The medication should be taken for the complete duration for which it is prescribed. If no improvement in symptoms is noticed, inform your doctor. To ensure Sporanox is not resulting in harmful effects, you have to test your liver function periodically. If you are allergic to itraconazole or medications such as ketaconazole or flucanazole, you should not take Sporanox. The same thing applies if you have had a congestive heart failure.
A Sporanox dose adjustment should be done if you have a history of stroke, circulation troubles, disorder of heart rhythm, heart disease, breathing disorders and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, kidney or liver disease, cystic fibrosis or a family history of Long QT Syndrome. The effects of Sporanox on unborn babies are not established. However, it is critical for pregnant women and those who are planning to become pregnant to consult a doctor. Itraconazole can pass through breast milk and cause problems to the new born. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers should not use Sporanox.
Sporanox Side Effects
Allergic reactions to Sporanox include swelling of throat, tongue, lips and face, complexities in breathing and skin rashes. Some of the serious side effects of taking this drug include fever, shortness of breath, breathing with mild exertion, quick weight gain, swelling, hearing problems, tingly feeling numbness, burning sensation while urinating, jaundice, clay colored stools, dark urine, weakness, appetite loss, low fever, stomach pain and nausea.
Some of the less serious issues include mild stomachache, constipation, diarrhea, skin rash or mild itching, dizziness, drowsiness, headache or cold symptoms such as runny nose. Diarrhea and gastrointestinal upset are the most common adverse effects of Sporanox otherwise the medication is always quite well tolerated.
